Thats for driving the subwoofer. By dialing it in, I mean to adjust the levels of the ourput and the EQ of the headunit and adjust the gain and the boost on the amplifier.

What do you mean strain? It is distorting? Is there nothing at the low end?

It's just not very loud. Would having a separate amp for the low frequencies enable the HU's amp to have more power (increased volume) to the midrange speakers and tweeters?

I've noticed that when I listen to talk radio, I have to keep turning up the volume to be able to make out what's being said sometimes. For music it's fine. It's just spoken word that I have trouble hearing sometimes.

Sounds like you may need to adjust the EQ on your stereo.

How about this?

i have a 190 e by the way, about your sub question, it depends how much power the amp sends to the subs, and if you want more. i have two twelve inch dual subs. ( dual electronics) the box is cheap and sends out alot of power. powering it i have a 1200w sony explod amp which wasn't all that expensive either. for the box and amp i paid about 300 dollars, and it's powerful enough that it cracked some of the mouldings in my car. ha so that's my input. ( For Cheaper, high quality sound, look at the upper models of sony decks)
here's a pic of the subs.

What would happen if you just mounted a subwoofer in the part of the trunk tha covers your spare tire? That's without putting it inside of an enclosure. Would that work?

subs need an enclosure so the sound waves can reverberate and such. A properly sized enclosure is always needed.

A bandpass box is a sealed box within a ported box, you get all the tight bass that you would from a sealed box but the tunability of a ported box. These boxes can make for a very load system but they can take up a lot of room.

They sound like crap. They are really boomy because of how they work. The bass really isnt precise like in a sealed enclosure. What you hear in a bandpass configuration is the noise coming from the back of the woofer, not the frint.
