Alpine CDA-9830 Problem with remote

I have an Alpine CDA-9830 in an '89 300 SE I just bought. All functions work as they should and it sounds great. The only problem is that the remote control doesn't work. I used a digital camera to verify that the remote is transmitting (at least I can see a light when I press any of the buttons), but can anyone tell me if that's enough to confirm that the remote is good? If so what is likely to be the problem. Thanks.

Owner's manual

I just bought a Jeep with an Alpine CDA-9856. I got an owner's manual PDF online. Has a trouble shooting section in it. Yours might too.
Just type into the web search bar Alpine CDA 9830. Then look to the bottom of the page for 'owner's manual'

I have the manual, but the trouble shooting section is pretty basic. For the remote is just says to check the batteries and be certain to point the remote at the unit.

I know the remote puts out a signal as you can see the I.R. light it transmits when looking at it with a digital camera.

I'm hoping someone has experience with this and can tell me if a new remote is what's needed or if it's the receiver in the head unit that is malfunctioning.
