Antenna won't fully retract
I noticed today that my antenna will not fully retract when I turn of the radio. Is there some way to adjust these? This is on my 1987 560 SEC.

I tried rather unsuccessfully to work on my Hirschman motor. Would not recommend it. However you can take the cover off the motor and use a screwdriver to make it return again. Just experiment. In all probablilty it will retract and then will work again. For how long - who knows. I ended up leaving the cover off for good. On the very few occasions when it does not retract fully, I just pop open the trunk, use the screwdriver to make it retract, and it works fine again - sometimes for months.

Specially treated cleaning cloths
Allegedly,You're supposed to wipe down the Metallic Antenna shaft at each oil
change (Or more often if in dusty conditions) All of the parts are available for repair EXCEPT the circuit board. (Walter Odemer in California will rebuild the board $125.USD) Sounds like maybe one of your plastic gears is worn. Or maybe you need a new mast. Or maybe just a little lube on the gears. http://www.antennaworld.com/2004/departments/amfm/techinfo/mercedes/downloads/6000el.pdf

I just take some 000 steel wool and shine up the shaft oil seems to attract dust to easily.

I took my wagon's antenna apart and cleaned everything inside. It was full of black crud that caused it to jam before it could retract all the way. The teeth on the small gear and the teeth on the antenna leader were packed with crud.
After I cleaned everything, I lubricated it all and reassembled. It works like new now. I used steel wool on the antenna shaft like TX mentioned.

Cleaning Antennae Mast
Dee8go,
Somewhere I've seen overpriced "official" "Mast Wipes". (One of the online retailers) I just use a clean lint free rag, sprayed with a little of this:

I was imprecise before. Actually, it retracts completely when i turn off the car or I press the up/down button on the dash. It's only when I switch off the radio that it retracts about 75% of the way and then stops. I can push the "down" button and it will go the rest of the way down. What might be the cause of this?

You mean there's a setting on your XM radio that controls that?
