antenna is toast...w123 wagon replacement?

I have an 85 w123 wagon with a broken power antenna and was looking for a cheap alternative replacement. I don't need a power antenna, a good manual or black stubby would be nice. It seems as though the slope of the body where it mounts is an issue.

Anyone have any solutions?

Why not just get one at the local junkyard. The only difference between D and probably SD is the collar.

My first 300D came with a black stubby and I tried not to notice it or think about it but it drove me nuts. It really looks bad on these cars, I suggest trying to find a cheap replacement and keeping it stock.

My two cents.

the MB antenna on my sdl is ready to give up and if it does'nt i only see it giving my problems down the road, i had a window mouted antenna on my caddy convert a while back, worked great as that power antenna didnt, barely noticable too. Google "Metra 44UA20 window antenna" that one works great, like $30 from cruthfield

The wagons have a different base angle where it meets the sheet metal.

hidden antenna on fleabay...

might be good to mount in rear side window near existing antenna location and fill the factory hole with a chrome cap/cover or whatever

What part of it is "broke". The units were made by Hirsch and they at one time had a US Office in New York. I contacted them years ago when the drive belt in the power antenna wore out on my 84 300SD. I was able to buy two belts/drive mast assemblies right over the phone from them and replaced it myself.
The units were made to rebuild if you can still get the parts.

What is broken? If it is the mask then you can get a replacement from eBay for < $20. It comes with instructions to extract the old mark and feed the new one into the body. If the motor mechanism is bad and the mask is OK then just do what I did. I fully extended the mask and jammed it inside the motor. Turn the antenna switch to off.

mast is broke and I hear no function from the antenna base......

just looking to replace with a functioning unit of some sort....I may buy the ebay unit and see how it goes

before I make the purchase I'll pull the old one and do a quick diagnosis

I do not want to spend the $150 and up for a "wagon" power antenna

Cannot agree with you more. I run my cars on the cheap. If you are handy, I am sure you can find a fix for it at very low costs. Or may be get one from a junkyard. I have transplanted 2 broken one into a good one on my SDL.

Good luck.

If you can't find a wagon antenna at the junkyard, you can get one for a sedan and just switch the guts out. My wagon antenna currently has the circutboard from my SD. They are all the same once you open them up.

If cheap is what you want stick a metal coathanger in the hole. It will work just fine.
