Is NASA tracking me?

1995 E320 Wagon

My wagon, with its becker 1492 was experiencing this weird symptom where the two in-door subs would just cut out. they would remain out until a random time where they felt the need to come back....but only for a sec, because shortly thereafter they would go away again. After exploring this forum I read that there was an amp tucked away in the depths of the wagon. I fiddled around with the cable, unplugged it and then put it back together. I guess it was a weak connection because that has fixed the problem.

In the process I discovered this flat round disk adhered to the inside of the rear quarter panel. it was located flush against the metal directly behind the yellow vac line that goes to the fuel filler door - you can see a discoloration where the double-sided tape was affixed. its got power lines going to it but doesn't have any MB markings as far as I can see. any idea what it could be?

NASA TRACKING DEVICE?

I'd guess at an old cell/car phone antenna. Government agencies use better quality tape.

Yeah, it costs $1000 a roll . . . . and the antenna would be capable of receiving transmissions for other galaxies . . . .

thats prolly a good call. I haven't traced the lines, but there are only 2, so if I assume one is +12v and the other a gnd, then that doesn't leave anything else for moving data. I could be wrong though.

+1 on the tape. it does look OEMish. Maybe the original cellphone pre-wire?

I wonder if it could be some sort of heater pad? is that the filler cavity I see behind it?
I HAVE seen FM antennae just like that though. two wires would be either end of the coil encapsulated in that disc. It's a giant loop.

I guess Lojack is essentially a satellite-driven system, is it not?

I think Lojack works more on a proximity RF location finder kind of thing... you don't put satelite antenna under a panel.

You can attach a Sirius or XM antennae on the underside of your trunk lid or to the metal just below your rear window.
