Poor AM reception in '98 E320 Wagon
AM reception has been gradually deteriorating. I Can pick up only the strongest stations, and there is a lot of noise when the engine is running. Where are the antenna/wiring/connectors and amplifier? I suspect a bad connection. FM reception seems OK.

You will need to check the antenna base ground in reference to chassis. The underneath of the antenna base is not grounding to the body of the car correctly. Measure with an ohmmeter whether the base of antenna is at 0 ohms to battery negative...If that is OK probably the antenna is defective in some way.

The antenna package (I don't know where it is in a wagon) probably has one or more wire braid ground straps from the antenna to the car body. It's possible that these are loose or poorly connected. Clean and tighten the connections, see if that helps.
Another possibility is the antenna mast itself, which is separably replaceable. A third possibility is the antenna wire where it plugs into the back of the radio. It might have pulled loose. Jeremy
