Becker Grand Prix
I took my battery out to paint the battery tray, got that all done and battery back in. Now the radio has like 5 straight lines going across the display, what is going on? It is not asking for a code, I thought that I saw somewhere that you dont need a code on a 1986 300E Becker? Any help?

So there is nothing I can do to get this radio to work again, this radio is in great shape. Everything works great, even the tape player.

Do you have the 5 digit code?
Enter it and see.
If you don't have the code, any MB dealer can access it from the VIN. Second thing would be the Miro-fuse in the back side of the radio... As they get older sometimes they get "Sensitive" (And the voltage surge from reconnection may have Boogered it[the fuse]. ) Nutcase that I am, I Always pull the Radio fuse(s) in the Fuse Box before dis/re connecting the main power source. Last (and hopefully not necessary) Resort, Becker NA can fix no matter what.

Will a Becker from a 1985 190E fit in my 1986 300E? Last edited by 04 Diesel; 04-06-2009 at 05:24 PM. |

See Below
Go Here:
http://web.mac.com/dakota/Mercedes/Becker.html and find your Becker model. There is a security code(AND if we blather on about it here long enough... Someone will have mercy on us and deliver it or the instructions on how to get it.) (To answer your last question: If the 190's radio is the same model Becker... It'll slide right in and plug up.)

Becker Grand Prix Model BE 754
Used in the 1986 and 1987 Mercedes.
Single-piece unit electronic AM, AM Stereo, and FM radio with automatic seek tuning and cassette player (with CrO2 tape switch and Dolby B Noise Reduction), and with anti-theft. Cassette must be manually inserted and ejected. One of the best AM Sections of any radio ever produced. Had over twice the audio power than the 81-85 version Model 612 which only had 7 watts per channel. Uses a back-up battery. The radio (used in '86, '87 and some '88 124/126s) was supposed to have a mercury battery that would maintain memory as long as the alarm wasn't set, but the batteries they used went dead within 6 months or a year (rather than the 5+ years predicted). This unit does not have a numerical code. It has a theft deterrent system hooked into the car alarm system. You can send the radio back to Becker and they will replace the battery for a about $75. Came with anti theft circuitry that needed to be reprogrammed at a MB Dealer or Becker when triggered. The model 754 radio was not designed to deactivate when the battery was disconnected. If the 754 is doing that, it simply means that the radio's internal lithium (or mercury?) battery is dead and it needs to be replaced. Once replaced, you can disconnect the vehicle battery and it will not 'dash-out' on you. If you have 4 dashes across the display the unit needs to be sent to Becker for repair. If the backup battery is dead, disconnecting the car battery will blank the display and it must be reactivated using the dealer tool with the radio installed in the car. Some dealers (American Service Center in Arlington, VA) will reactivate the radio gratis, some dealers will do it if you slip the service writer a $5-10 bill. Some dealers charge $30 or so to reactivate the radio. Can be modified by Becker with an auxiliary input to accept an MP3 or iPod.

See the second paragraph from the bottom,Above.
'Looks like the temporary "fix" for you is to make friends with a MB shop employee and have the radio "Reset"
'Long term would be a new internal battery. [SLAP Me with a 3 day old stinky Mullet,I was wrong! Your "Tuner" has no code]

No Code, sorry dude. Probably not worth fixing. If you want a Becker, find a 780 model that uses the code so you can just write it on the case and on a card in your records for this event. I did for the one in my SDL.
612 was '85 and down until about '80 754 was 1986-87 780 was 1988-89 1480 for 1990 only 1432 from 1991 to ?? I'm guessing '94.

There are not many junkyards around here that have any Mercedes, I have found one 124, four 123s and two 201s. That is it.
