1988 300E 124 Radio dead
Hello all!
I am new to this list and this is my first post. I own a 1988 300E and a 2005 CLK 320 and live in sunny SoCal. The battery of my 300E went dead and now that it is fully charged, the radio will not come on when i press the power button. I hear clicks from the radio as the button is pressed and held pressed in but no power up and not even the antenna gets deployed. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks! Suley |

RADIO
'Does the little screen show Dashes (----),
Or say CODE, Or say WAIT ? If it shows dashes or CODE it wants you to punch in the 4 or 5 digit anti-theft code (The Dealer will give it to you based on the VIN when you show ID and Registration.) If it says WAIT, you must, for either 10-15 minutes or 24 hours [with the radio turned on] (Depending on how many incorrect codes have been entered) Then it'll say CODE again and you can enter it using the radio preset buttons. if there "Ain't Nuffin" on the screen ,one of two things. 1.There's a Micro-Fuse in the back of the Radio unit itself that's blown. 2. There were some Beckers that could only be reset by the Dealer.

I took this car (the SD) to the dealer, they told me there is a tool to reset it. And if it's showing anything other than dashes or "CODE", it's history.
It will show different messages at different times. As soon as I turn the key the antenna goes up.

The internal battery in the head unit is dead. Based on said age of vehicle, I think the coin battery is good for about 10 years of duty as far as storing the security codes and booting up the radio when power is restored.
When the coin battery gets old, if the car sits for prolonged periods w/o electricity (dead battery or storage), the head unit battery dies and the radio loses the ability to boot up and prompt for the security codes. Lost mine that way while my 300E underwent a major top-end rebuild...several weeks disconnected from the battery. Becker wants about $200 to reset the unit...see sticky at top of this forum for more info.

Dead Radio
Your radio is a BE612 and that radio does have a battery in it that goes bad but that has nothing to do with the normal functioning of the radio. The battery is for station memory only. Your problem is the capacitors are shorting out in the radio. We rebuild these radio and will continue until we run out of parts. Becker shut the door on parts to all service centers including us. Becker Auto Sound (not owned by Becker/Harmon) purchased the inventory that Becker had. When we all run out of parts that will be it for the oldies but goodies. We have a strong inventory in parts just like Becker Auto Sound. If you wish to have your radio serviced let me know.
