Angry Warn Them or DIY !

As most of you know, the fuel tank in a W123 300D is directly behind the back seat. This is something the car-audio technicians found out the hard way at Best Buy when they were running speaker wire. We both learned our lessons as they drilled a hole straight through it, causing fuel to fill up the trunk and leak out of the vents into the driveway after a fill up.

So for future reference to those of you who aren't interested in doing car-audio work, make sure you warn the people who are doing it before hand.

Otherwise (and as for me,) I plan on doing that myself from now on.

Anyone know the M.S.R.P. for a '84 300D fuel tank?

Calling daw!!!

They puncture them at the PNP's around here so you can't get one used. I guess that is their draining method.....

When I had my system installed, the guy at Tweeter knew right away that the fuel tank was there ... they installed a board to mount the amp on in the trunk. Good store. Unfortunately the store chain folded. Hopefully I can find another place like that if I get any other stereo work done ... I wouldn't mess with Best Buy. Too hit or miss.

There is NO way that I would let the kids at Best Buy into my car. Even if they don't manage to puncture the fuel tank, there's no way to predict how bad that they will hack up the wiring harnesses.

Well at this point, my claim keeps making it up the corporate ladder! It's really frustrating having to wait like this, but hopefully things work out with Best Buy. It would be nice if they payed the MSRP of the tank instead of what I could get one for anywhere else. We'll see! A check would be nice!

Good luck with your claim. I was at two JY's last week, all six MB diesels were missing the fuel tank. (123's and 126's)

They will pay for the entire repair &/or have a hit on their liability coverage. Unfortunately, it is likely to sit on someone's desk. I suggest: 1. Do your research on new tank and install. Include all necessary parts ie sending unit, hoses, whatever needed for a PROPER repair. 2. Talk to the store manager (briefly) explaining that having this drag out is unacceptable. 3. Decide exactly what you want them to do. 4. Immediately go up the ladder until you find a person that has authority cut a check. 5. Remember to be nice - this is simply a business transaction AND you are without your vehicle (due to their negligence) making a rental a legitimate additional charge.

They screwed it up so they pay for repair. You be in charge of repair so that it is done correctly. Don't actually do repair yourself. Insurers only pay for install when someone else does it.

If the hole was in a ralatively flat surface, a self-sealing blind rivet would make for a perfectly acceptable repair.

I had the tip of a screw go into the fuel tank. The fuel tank epoxy repair kit worked fine for me. Otherwise, the indie said to remove it and take it to a radiator shop for cleaning and repair.
