As far as the speaker problem goes, Chadd modified the speaker grilles in his wagon because the tweeters sat too high. Look through his posts if you want to see how he handled that. His solution turned out very well.

Here are a couple more pics. You can really see the difference in the colors of the original Palomino under the rear seats, the faded palomino on the back of the rear seats, the faded palomino (nearly pink) on the right rear panel that holds the jack and first aid kit, and the new carpet that I put in.

More thoughts:

If you're going to put new carpet under the seats, which I recommend, be sure to do it when you have the seats out. Don't get in a hurry like I did and put them in unfinished.

I'm sure I'll have more soon, but for now, I'm calling phase 1 complete with this post-mortem assessment, and all stakeholder approval (me). The success criteria has been met, and this project is leaving the close phase (yes, I'm a Project Manager ).

BTW, the carpet I used was latex backed Ozite brand. I will get part numbers later.

I went by a second hand fabric store today and found a bunch of foam and carpet. Might be a good place to look for foam and carpet. Just make sure it's unbacked carpet and closed cell foam.

Alright, carpet details on tap. I bought 5 yards of Ozite in Buckskin color, part # CB8LM430072. I am pretty happy with it, but like I said before, get 8 yards. You'll need it, at least for a wagon.

Near 1 year update:

Is it really quiet?
-Yes, it's pretty awesome.

Was it worth it?
-Not really, it was a lot of work. I do like the carpet though, that was definitely worth it. The knowledge of the interior of my car was also valuable.

Do you recommend someone else do a project like this?
-If you plan on having the car forever, maybe. You'll never gain anything in resale by doing this. The carpet is nice to have brand new, but this was way more work than I thought it would be originally. Limit your scope if you attempt a project like this.

Excellent thread. I have thought many times about doing this on my 115. I really want to cut down on the road noise if I can. Currently the car bothers the wife and I want to change this.

Just read this post for the first time as I just picked up an Aerostar and am thinking of sp'ing a bit....

rear wheel drive in a stock ford is not as quiet any stock Mercedes....

I've replaced many front dash speakers in my 300D -CDs and excellent sounding -worthy of all your effort- 4" speakers would MB Quart .....

* note you cannot get any speaker that has a protrusion above the outside rim /frame of the speaker itself ...these are a bit high in price

Good to hear that you liked the thread. The soundproofing is still working well, but it sure was a lot of effort.

Advice to anyone looking to do this: think long and hard about your budget and motivation. This was a difficult project.

Super nice thread and great info. I particularly like that you included quantities. With so many corners, grooves and weird angles it's seems impossible estimate how much material to buy.

Did you ever do the doors? I've read quite a few threads here and elsewhere - many say the doors are the least soundproofed surfaces and benefit the most from deadening.

Yeah, I did do the doors. Plan to spend some time in the doors with a putty knife because there's some waxy material that's on there pretty good. You have to scrape it off and clean the surface before you can get good adhesion inside the doors. This is a good chance to look for vacuum leaks if you have any
