How to remove radio from 240d

I have a 1983 240d. I was wondering if there is some easy trick to use when removing the original Becker radio. I am sure I could remove the whole center console, but I bet someone here knows the correct way to pull it. My radio works, but the tuner will not adjust the stations. Only the pre-set channels work. The tape deck is shot also. I'm not interested in fixing it. I just want to replace it with a modern stereo-cd player. Thanks for any help in advance.. Dave

Remove the tuning knobs, then remove the plastic face cover, then you will see the bolts which hold the locking bars in.

That's not what I had to do. Haynes has a good article on it. remove the ash tray (pops right out) take out two screws and the bracket, hold down the spring tabs underneath the radio on either side and just pull the radio out. You might need an extra hand for that part. If you're not interested in fixing it, you want to send it my way perhaps?

Well, it depends on if your radio has electronic tuning or not. The directions I gave are for a manual tuning radio.

Guys, there's more than one style radio and brand and they do come out differently depending on model.

the manual tuning radio, like the one whose face plate appears in my signature, also requires removal of the ashtray in order to take it out, at a minimum. there are metal plates on either side of the radio which by gravity sink down to the cup that the ashtray fits into.

in this pic you can see the two metal plates. the plate on the right has sunk down but the one on the left hasn't--if you jiggle the radio it will sink. it's an anti-theft feature on the becker 599

Radio removal

Thank you everyone, for all your help. The radio in my car looks exactly the same as the one on Sev's post. Mine did not have the anti-theft devices Sev wrote about. Maybe they were removed sometime in the past. I decided to try both methods for removing the radio. I removed the knobs and faceplate. I could see 2 bright metal brackets, or spring clips along the bottom of the radio. I pushed them down with considerable effort, and the radio popped forward. All I had to do then was disconect the wiring. I did not even have to remove the ashtray below the radio. Thank again for all of the realy fast replies and help.. Dave
Does anyone know of a good basic Am/FM/CD radio that fits, without too much trouble. I'm not looking for anything too fancy, just something that works, and looks OK. I'd be willing to send the old radio to anyone, as soon as I get the new one installed.. Dave

blaupunkt makes good ones, plus they're the most commonly used stereos to swap the stock ones with. they make newer ones with SD card capability, and mini-rc jacks

Thanks Again

I thought I would let everyone know that the new radio I bought had specs that said: 1.0 DIN Chassis/ISO/DIN mountable It slides in like it was made for it. I Think I will send the radio to JEBalles when I get the new one fully installed. Thanks to everyone.. Dave
