W115 audio upgrade questions

As a Christmas present to my self i think i'll finally make the radio sound good in my W115.

I think im going to go with a Blaupunkt head unit.

Im going to put 5.25 speakers in the rear. Since the early w115's didn't have rear speakers the the mounting depth is very small, but I think I can just push down the thin metal so I could put a deeper speaker in.

As for the front there are small 3.5 Clarion boxes installed now. See pic

I don't know what to do with that. Anyone got any suggestions? I guess I could fine someone with the stock 4" boxes and put new 4" speakers in them.

If anyone has any suggestions please let me know.

I'm not sure how the rear deck looks like on the w115 but you can probably make 1-inch high mounting rings and plant them to the rear deck so the speakers have some depth. Then while you're at it might as well recarpet that area to give it a flush look so the speakers don't look too high.

Which type of Blaupunkt are you looking for?

i'd rather not put 1" rings in the back, that would look kinda ghetto.

For the front speakers i'll just put 4" round Blaupunkt speakers in. I mean theres nothing else I can think of to do.

Im going for this radio, what ya think?

That Blaupunkt looks great. Apparently Crutchfield does not sell Blaupunkt units anymore (just accessories/amps/etc but not HU's). Very nice! Is it a new model?

You might want to upgrade your alternator to deal with the increased demand.

I think the straight lines of the radio will look good in the W115. I also like that the aux input is on the front of the radio, many of the others have it on the back. I think its a new model, im going to call tomorrow and see if that arrival date of Dec 16 is firm.

Ya, Crutchfield doesn't carry Blaupunkt anymore.

I think the alternator will be OK, its a 65 amp and it works great. Im not going to install a amp or sub or anything. My alt puts out over 13V with the headlights on, at idle, so it seems pretty strong.

Is your stock head unit a mono? Just wondering...if it's a stereo just send it up to Becker in NJ and have them rebuild it with an ipod jack.
If it's a mono, PM me, I may want it for another project.

Good ideas on the sound system, I was going for the twin 4" in the center pod and some old BMW (gasp) E30 two-way speakers on the rear deck...kind of period correct looking items.

JMURiz,

I like those rear speakers. Where did you get those? I'm taking out Becker Europa mono radio and putting in modern tunes.

I got them from a local Porsche guy that was gutting an E30 BMW to do the 24 hours du LeMons, haha.

You can usually get them on the cheap, I was going to put higher end components in the housings (to get the good sound and period correct look), just never got about to doing that project.

JMURiz,

Are the speakers flush with the back of the enclosure or do they require a hole to be cut into the mounting surface?

They require a hole for the speaker magnet

JMURiz,

Thanks for the info. A hole is do-able just not desirable.
