1991 190E 2.6 Audio System Question

Does a '91 190E 2.6 eqipped with an audio amplifier? If it does where is it located at? The radio works but no volume and no audio coming out on all speakers.

If your car was equipped with the front door mini subwoofers, then there will be an amp and crossover circuit in that Alpine built system.

The typical item for speaker failure is the fader wheel switch on the shifter console.

it's located in the trunk, on the passenger side (for LHD models). you have to peel back the plastic interior cover to access the amplifier.

mti didn't know this

thanks sev! i'll check on that! the problem i'm having is there is no sound or even a hiss or crackle coming out of all 6 speakers on the dash, front doors and rear deck. i havent tried to test the fader wheel yet to check if it's the culprit.

190E Radio

I would like to pass on the following info for all to read.
The 190E radio (either the 5 preset or 6 preset radio) had a problem internally with the amplifier section shorting out and sending DC to the speakers which in turn burns up the speaker coils in the speaker. If the speakers are original you can bet they are bad and will need to be replaced. The radio must be serviced prior to playing the radio again with new speakers or you will have them play for a little while and then you will be replacing the speakers again. We can service your radio and in fact have them in stock for direct exchange. Let me know if I can be any further service to anyone. Thank you and have a Happy New Year to all.

i've owned 190e's with the cm2190/cm2191 head unit (the stock head unit for models after 1989), and stock speakers, and they weren't bad. i'm sure if these head units were as bad as you say they were, mercedes would of issued a recall on them, but they didn't do so--they installed them on three different chassis for like two or three years

Recalls

Recalls are only done if there is a safety issue for the driver otherwise if it fails during warranty it would be replaced. I am quite confortable in saying what I have said since I have been servicing Mercedes vehicle Audio systems as well as all other brands and makes for 38 years. Those that know me know that what I pass on to others are just technical facts accumulated over many years of experience. If your speakers were not bad then you are the minority not the majority in reference to the 190E vehicles. The info I pass on is for informational purposes for those seeking help with little or no cost to them. Take it for what it is worth. Use it if you feel confortable with the advice. Thank you all for using Mercedes Shop Forum. A good source for info.
