Basslink

I have an Infinity BassLink sub that I hope to be installing in the Dee8gonator as soon as I have some time and there is no snow or sleet falling. I'm thinking it should be pretty easy to do. Is there anything I need to take into consideration beofre I get started?

You may want to put the car back together before you install the sub.

Very funny . . . . It's pretty much reassembled. I guess it would be best if I pull the carpet up and run the wiring under that, power on one side and the signal wire on the other side?

I have a Basslink in my '85 380SE and my 86 560SL. They both sound really great for their size and cost. I can't think of anything special for the install really. I found the best placement in both trunks was on the left side, facing across the trunk. This keeps the floor clearest for cargo, and goes with the audio theory of allowing the bass waves the longest distance for best effect (just a theory I read about). Your trunk might be different and not as good a spot though.
I posted way back on making a special bracket to mount the unit to, essentially, the inside of the left fender, next to the antenna in the 380. In the SL, it just sits wedged between the bottom of the trunk rain gutter and the floor, using all 4 of the mounting feet supplied. I did have to remove a piece of the underpadding on the floor to get the clearance just right.
For hookup, I used power from the antenna plug in the 380, and the battery in the trunk of the SL. If you connect to the speaker leads, the Basslink turns on and off by itself. So, you're probably looking at running wires from the nearest pair, hopefully in the rear on the package shelf. The other hookup is directly from the head unit. I don't know if there is any appreciable difference in audio quality one way or the other.
I found it easiest to follow the antenna wiring from the trunk into the cabin, then under the carpet and consol to end up at the best place at the dash area. Some go under the sides where the stock harness goes, but that is a lot more work, especially getting from the side(s) to the head unit in the consol/dash center.
I have the remote also in both cars. It's useful to tone down the bass when the source is too strong, or boost it a little when the source is weak. Well worth having, and easily added later if yours didn't come with one.
Post your results if you get time...

Are you saying that you made the power connection fo rthe BassLink from the power leads going to the antenna? It was my understanding that the power is run directly from the battery, which in my case is in the engine compartment. Did I understand you correctly?

Yes, that's how I connected it, so it powers up when the car is running, but turns itself on when it senses voltage from the speakers. I've done this before when the Basslink was mounted in another car and have never had a problem.

If you retract the antenna, does that power off the sub? I retract my antenna when I'm using my satellite radio to cut sown on interference.

Hey Tom, if you decide to run the power kit from the battery, you can run the power wire and the signal wire down the same side (passenger). I bought an amp power kit that had shielded cables for my wagon so it wasn't a problem. I think most amp install kits are shielded now.

I paid about $60 for the install kit which came with 20' of 8 gauge wire, 3' ground cable, 20' signal cables, an inline fuse and a remote power wire.

I did buy an install kit with the signal and power cables. The power has a built-in fuse and connector for the battery. I was just looking for the easy way out (as is my nature) as far as running the wiring goes. I didn't realize that about the shielding, though. I'll have to check. If I only had to tear up one side of the car, that would make it easier.

If you find the wire in the antenna plug that shows 12V with the ignition on, no voltage with the key off, and no change with radio on or off and antenna up or down, then that is how I wired mine in. Since your car is different, the wire color will be different from the one I used. If there is no wire/pin in the plug that is in the antenna harness, then you'll either need to run 12V from the battery, or from another source.
