Yellow dash light showing after radio install
I recently put in a new deck as well as new speakers. I must have done something, because there is a new yellow light shining bright in the dashboard that I've no idea what it means. It looks like an upside down light bulb with an exclamation point in the middle, surrounded by 7 dashes.
THe manual I have is all in German, and I dont sprecken sie deutsch. Any help you guys could offer would be good. thanks. |

Wow! You really screwed up BIG TIME!!! Your do-it-yourself stereo install blew an engine head gasket in the process, and the warning light indicates that an overhaul is due soon!!!
. . . . . . Seriously, that is a "bulb out" indicator. Since it only came on when you switched on the headlights, one of the bulbs related to nighttime illumination is burnt out, which can include the license plate bulb(s), overlooked by many. Turn the headlights on and walk around the car to see which bulb is out. The timing of such an event was purely coincidental...unless you blew a fuse during the install that happened to be tied to a lighting circuit as well...unlikely unless you are splicing into random wires you are discovering as "hot"...

you scared me with the beginning of that post..phew..
I definatly did some splicing, there were four wires to get into, a brown (ground), black/yellow(constant), red/white(ignition), and one more can't remember the color. I looked around the car, all the lights are on for plates, turning signals, dome lights, headlights. Everything seems to work fine, I'm close to considering the problem one of those "yea...it always does that no big deal Rick the cars a champ" criterion. Any other input would be saaaweet, unless it's a blown head gasket. I no like that. |

update...
The colors for the wires are red/white, purple/grey, yellow/black, and brown. If anyone knows which is which for a 1986 250D, help me out! |

You can start by disconnecting the turn-on, power, and ground leads from your head unit, then switching on the headlights to see if the "bulb out" indicator goes away.
The "bulb out" principle works on measuring a fixed resistance, and a bulb that's out in the whole circuit sends a different resistance value, thus triggering the "bulb-out" light. So if you happened to splice into that circuit, the presence of the head unit would certainly cause the same effect...

I disconnected those wires and the light still appeared on. I checked the fuse box and nothing was blown. The main issue I'm having now is keeping constant power to the cd deck.
I've hooked up the wires both ways (switching what I though was 12v constant/12v ignition) and vice versa. Each time had the same outcome, the cd player only remembers the settings that I put in for about five minutes, before resetting. The strange thing is, I can turn the car on and off within these first few minutes and it remembers what I put in! I'm stumped. |
