How I fixed my buzzing w124 dash speaker

I had a buzzing sound coming from my right dash speaker. It almost sounded like a small coin was sitting on the coin and rattling.

After listening to the speaker outside of the dash while prodding it, I figured out the noise was coming from the copper feed wires from the terminal post to the voice coil. The first fix I tried was to put anti-squeal brake grease on the wire (keeping it from paper cone). I knew it wouldn't work because I was so confidant it would work.*

Next I realized the glue had come loose where the wires penetrate the cone. So I got some gorilla glue and lightly dampened the coil and wedged some glue in there. After it dried it cured I hooked it up and there was still some fuzz but not as bad. I also noticed that noise went away when I put a little tension on the feed wires, so I wedged a tweaker between each wire and the notch they fit in on the post. Put the speaker back in the dash and now there's no more noise. I canceled my order for rainbow speakers when I got an email they were back ordered.*

I'm not sure what fixed the speaker. Probably a combination of the extra tenstion on the wire and the glue. I think a little contact cement or other rubberized glue on both the posts and the cone feed holes would work better to dampen the noise, since it's obviously coming from the un shielded feed wires contacting the paper cone and rattling.*

Hope this helps someone save money by not having to replace their speakers. I only tried to fix it when I realized the Polk db501 speakers I ordered were too small for the cutout. Also, they didn't sounds partitularly better than stock speakers, and are definitely less efficient. I'm a big fan of full range drivers, and it looks lime everybody makes coaxials these days. One thing I'll try in order to protect the speakers is wire a series capacitor to roll off the low range, that should help make them last a little longer. I'm also toying with the idea of spraying some UV protectent on them. Or just a light misting of a clear finish. Even with the grill covering them the sun is eventually going to break 'em up.*

I'm typing this from my phone now, so I'll post some photos later. *

but if you roll off the bass w/ a cap, your losing the best part of the music. really, w/ speakers, bigger is better, up to 12". (may pops don't count)

I have the door woofers that fill in the bass a little, and I'm installing a small sub, so I'll take sound quality from the dash over crappy thud any day.
