Dead gauges, radio resetting, etc..
..a while back I left my lights on and drained the battery. managed to jump start it and had some residual problems with that annoying alarm coming on but i pulled one of the wires from the alarm horn. Since then, the car has no problem starting but when I hit a bump, the battery light comes on sometimes. I have no idea how old the battery is, but like I said, no problems starting. Now, the left side of the instrument cluster with the gas gauge, temp and oil pressure has gone dead, and the tach did once as well but seems to be working fine right now. In addition to this, the aftermarket radio I installed resets every time the car is turned off, including the clock, any preset stations, etc. which is pretty annoying. I checked the fuses, they seem to be ok and the battery connections and ground are good. Any suggestions?
Oh yeah, the car is an 87 190d with 136,000 miles on it. |

Iam not sure on the 190D, but I was having a eratic temp gauge and some other electrical issues.
My problem on the 85 300D was the ground strap from the engine to the body. pull the strap and clean it and the ground points good, and reatach. my problem was paint on the engine end of the strap, scraped it off, and every thing works as it should. Charlie

Thanks, I appreciate the advice. I have no idea where this strap is on my car though, can you let me know?

Ground strap is underneath on drivers side, where the transmission bolts to the engine, but I would suspect a bad connection when the radio was installed to the ignition switch. Otherwise, why the reset?

Cool, Ill check that ground strap. I hope I dont have to remove that underside panel to get to it. As far as the ignition switch connection, I checked it and it seems to be good. I also strated another thread where I am having some lock-tumbler problems so maybe all of this is connected/
