W124 - mystery dash wire

My wife and kids gave me an awesome new stereo (Pioneer DEH-P6200BT) for Father's Day, and I finally got around to installing it today. In the process of fishing around in the console, I came across an unconnected connector.

I've seen me work before, so I have to acknowledge the possibility that I knocked it loose from the climate block while I was fishing around with the hands-free phone cable in the radio space.

If any one can identify this thing for me, I sure would appreciate it! I'm sure if I busted the AC, I'll figure it out after daybreak tomorrow. The hard part will be getting in back in the right spot working blind.

Thanks,
Tom

PS I apologize for the poor photo quality. It was getting dark, and my phone was all I had.

Not sure about the wire at all but I can't resist saying that I just bought a 95 E300d and feel the sound system in the car is outstanding. If ever I have an issue or need maintenance I pack it off and send it to Becker in North Jersey. Could never understand why everyone is in a hurry to remove the Becker and toss it. My car came with a set of Bridgestone Tires and I can't wait to wear them out so that I can toss them. Years ago a driver stood a car, literally, on it's nose in the rain. Always felt it had something to do with the Bridgestones. Good luck in you hunt. Someone will be able to help,.

The original stereo in my 95 E300D is pretty cool, and I certainly haven't tossed it. I was fine with it, but my wife wanted to kick it up a notch.

I think my her motivation (apart from her love for me, and her love of gadgetry) is the 18 hours we spent driving to New Orleans and back without our own music programming. I use a cassette adapter for my MP3 player in the car, but the cassette player only plays the right channel. My car did not have the CD player in the trunk, either. That was a lot of station hunting.

Thanks!
Tom

Good News Everyone!

I finally got back in the car today (I hate diverticulitis). Everything worked great. AM. FM. CD. AUX jack to my MP3 player. Auto-answer Bluetooth.

I have not yet tried the USB jack with a thumb drive pf music, though.

More pertinent to this thread, my climate control all worked fine. The temp dial still controlled temperature and fan speed automatically, cold or hot.

I still wonder what that connector is, but I no longer worry about what it is.

Regards,
Tom

I recognize that connector, it is part of the climate control system. Nut sure it's purpose, but connects slightly above where the stereo would be into a square hole. The sensor tip points toward the front of the car.

Thanks, Jay!

I figured it came from up there. Climate controls seemed to work OK without it in place, so I wonder what it does.

I had tried to remove that block of climate control stuff when I was putting in the radio, but I did not have any luck. Maybe I can find a small mirror the next time I am back in the dash.

Regards,
Tom

What part couldn't you get out? I have never had a problem taking it all out, so you might be missing a fastener or two.

I should have taken pictures. As I recall, there were two silver screws that I removed. It looked like that panel should swing up, with two hooked pieces holding the upper edge in place. I was able to get some movement, but not enough to move that whole block out of the way.

Probably, I got enough movement to disconnect that one connector.

Thanks!
Tom

OK. Here is proof positive of my laziness. I got back into my dash today, a mere 8.5 months after raising the question.

JayK was right. There was a hole facing the front of the car that this fit into. I am fairly certain that this is a temperature probe of some sort. After I knocked it loose while installing the radio, the AC auto-temp got pretty squirrely. After I put it back yesterday, that seemed to improve.

Of course, I found another stray wire. It is like an octopus convention back behind the radio! As I recall, the wire is brown with blue stripe. It has a plastic block over a female connector, with some sort of weird aluminum bracket attached (can't find my cable to download from the phone). With a mirror, I was unable to find a stray male spaded connector. The radio and climate control all work, so I will let this mystery percolate.

The reason I was in the car was to finally install my Christmas present: a new side mirror switch. Woo hoo!

Some day, I will get back to the year-old mystery dash rattle.
And the stationary driver's window.
And the stationary radio mast.
And the mystery coolant leak.
And the glow plugs (they go at the bottom of the list for now, since the weather has warmed up)

Regards,
Tom

It's the temp sensor for the heater box. The push button CCU gets input from 3 or 4 sensors.

If the antenna is stuck up, most likely is a worn antenna mast tail- it has ridges that wear down and the gears in the motor can't engage the tail to lower the mast. You replace the mast. Hopefully, it's not a dead antenna motor.

The clip you mention clips to the bottom center of the Becker radio. It's the connection to the anti-theft system.

Thanks for the wealth of info. I was able to get the sensor back into position the next time I was behind the radio. The AC works much better with it in there!

I looked at the old radio after that chore, and I saw where the clip would have gone.

I bought a replacement mast, but no luck. The motor runs, but still no movement. I fear that the drive gear is stripped. I have not been motivated enough to address it.

Thanks for the input!

Tom
