There aren't any stereo amplifiers on the 1986 420SEL. Mercedes didn't publish the brand of speaker but Becker put their name on them.

THANKS, but also does anyone know what size the stock speakers are in a 86' 420 sel.
Do you think a set of KENWOOD or INFINITY speakers would be a huge improvment over stock in bass ??
THANK YOU

I think they are 4" speakers with the designation "4M", at least that is what my 300D (W123) would have used. That's a pretty small speaker to expect deep bass, but you may get *more* bass by using a beefier speakers and electronics. About 2 years ago I replaced all the audio components in my 90 Acura Integra (Alpine cassette head unit 35wpc x 4 and cd changer, 4 speakers: 2 each Alpine and Eclipse I think) and the cost was right around $1000 installed.

If you want thumping low low bass, I've heard of people removing or modifying the first aid kit and rear deck storage compartments on the MB 123 and 126, and mounting 10 or 12 inch woofers there. I havent heard any such systems, but I'd imagine that you could easily spend twice what I did if you want to go nuts with outboard amps, subs etc. Also with more power comes the need to upgrade wiring, alternators, etc.

Check with Crutchfield (www.crutchfield.com) on replacement speaker sizing issues for your car. It's not only diameter that matters but depth as well.

The existing factory speakers are probably cheap paper cones. I think you'll find a dramatic improvement with almost speaker, but Infinity and Rockford-Fosgate are my favorites. Like Robert said, you might not get much improvement in bass with such a small speaker, but the highs and overall sound clarity will make it worth doing.

Crutch field has no info on this model MB and little on MB in general. Better to check with a good installer. There sizing of speakers for my wife's Subaru GT proved to by false and much deepr speakers could be used.

In general, I find Crutchfield carries mediocre gear that can be bought elsewhere for substantially less. My favorite electronics, Alpine, Eclipse, Nakamichi are not carried by them, nor are my favorite values in speakers, DEI Studio and Diamond Audio Motorsports. For what Crutchfield gets for the mediocre, you can but the good stuff.

I would discuss your desires with a good installer who can tell by looking what will fit for speakers. I just replaced those in my E320 with speakers much large than what came in the car. I have seen a good installer get a 6" speaker 2.5" deep in a car Crutchfield say will take a 5" speaker 2.125" deep.

You might want to check out Reus Systems at 714-772-7779. I bought a speaker system that was designed for the 560SL, and it sounds superb. It wasn't cheap, but there was no cutting and you can't tell anything was done to the interior. Good luck.

Ken

My '87 560SEL has a pair of 4" speakers in front and a pair of 6" speakers in the rear.

They are 6 ohm and the only ID on them is the MBZ star.

I think they are composite cones or possibly composite coated.
