I recently replaced my radio and rewired the existing speakers bypassing the fader in the console. My question is why do the rear speakers seem to increase volume considerable after the radio volume is turned up to a certain point? If the radio volume is just so the speakers seem to go on and off dependeing on the musical passage's loudness

At your place I would check the installation again. There is certainly a loose connection...
