How "compatible" are the assorted Becker Grand Prix models?

I have a 1983 380SEL with the older Grand Prix (small LCD) like the one in this picture:


I've been keeping an eye out for one of the newer Grand Prix models with larger LCD, like this one:


If I come across one in good condition, would it be plug-compatible? Could I just yank the old one out and drop the new one in its place? Or will I need some rewiring (at which point I'll just put in the Blau)?

I've noticed that the later Becker models have higher power output and am hoping that might help sound quality, but am afraid to blow anything up.

I have a "newer" Becker Grand Prix (like the one in your picture) that I would like to sell. It came with my 1985 300D that I just purchased. The dolby button is broken off, but Becker sent me a replacement button which I will install tomorrow. The radio works fine, but the tape does not, and I'm not sure what the problem is. The unit is cosmetically perfect (other than the button) Make an offer on the Grand Prix and let's work something out. I'm going to buy a Blaupunkt Miami Beach (had one in my last Volvo). It should work well with the MB-Quarts that I installing (now residing in my 91 300TE 4-matic (for sale, by the way)).

Thanks Chris, but what I still need to know is whether the new model (like you have) can be dropped into the same wiring system as the older model like I have.

Also, one of the problems with my current Becker is the tape player - I'd like to resolve that problem in an upgrade.

Why do you want an old Becker?! There are so much better radios than that one and they are not too expensive...

I'd prefer a replacement Becker for a number of reasons:

1) Most of today's decks have 40,000 colors of neon lights and animated thingies that look WAAAAY out of place on a stately S-class sedan. Blaupunkt is one notable exception, and barring my ability to put a newer Becker in, I'll stick in a Blau.

2) I like the OEM look of the Becker. It's nicely balanced with the rest of the controls - everything looks "centered" on the console.

3) I like the OEM functionality of the Becker - my fader switch works, the antenna switch works, etc. Going aftermarket would require at least bypassing fader control.

4) I'd rather not have to pay for an installer to tear apart my car for an aftermarket installation.

Going back to the origin of this thread - does ANYONE out there know if a newer Grand Prix (1985, 6, 7) would plug into the wiring from an older one (1983)?

Just to close out this thread for the record in case someone searches in the future:

My Grand Prix from 1983 380SEL is model 612, which can easily be upgraded to model 754 (1986/1987) or model 780 (1988/1989). According to Becker NA, the radio connectors did not change during that period.

Haven't decided whether I'll do it or not, but I'll post here with results if I do.
