Hi!
I have two 8" bass'es mounted as openair on a 1/10" thick wood board in the back of my car. But the bass respons is not so good, so I am planning to build me a ventilated bandbass box to have in my trunk. I then replace the wood board to my orginal shelf. In the orginal shelf I have two small holes for 4" speaker(which I won't use). Under one of these holes I will try to put the outgoing tube from the box so I can pump the sound through the hole and in in the compartment.

* What to you recomend?

Sorry for asking the question, I found the answer myself in a swedish magazine... On all cars with an gasoline tanc behind the backseat(as MB Sedan and Audi Sedan etc) it is allways difficult to mount/build something good. The best thing in a regular car is a sealed, ported or single-reflex bandpass box directly under the hat shelf.

But with the gasoline tanc there it is a bit more difficult. According to the magazine build a (ported) 4:th or 6:th bandpass box and let it play through the hat shelf. I will try to build myself a 6:th, in that way I can build a box, place it on the right or left side(and use the space there for it) and then mount the tube from the box so it goes through the hat shelf. I do have to make the existing hole(where the orginal speakers would be mounted) slighty bigger to give room for a single 3" tube.

The speaker in a 6:th is inside the box so I don't have to make it to play through the hat shelf aswell=I can take advantage of the left or right trunk side for the box.

If a remember I will post a note here how it went.

patrick....I have spent hours on end customizing my stereo in my 190E, and have over $2500 US dollars invested in it. I built a custom ported box for the trunk that is incredilble. I took out the emergency kit and had thelid professionally cut off and then lined the opening with matching speaker cloth to cover it. This left me with a hole in which I ported two ports. Right now I hit 142 decibels, not bad for a rookey. Don't remove the rear deck lid with the speakers, it will depreciate the car's value. If you don't use the opening to port the subs, you can fit two 6x9 speakers perfectly in the space also. Just write me directly if you have any questions, I have all my dimensions, and know how to run the wiring, etc, etc, etc....P.S. you can mount your amp behind the gas tank, makes for an awesome place to protect it from thiefs, but only if it is cooled. Sorry for this late posting...

I have tried different mountings now. I first removed the orginal rear deck lid and built myself one of 19mm MDF-board(not easy) and mounted 2 JBL GT8" subwoofers in the hole were the first aid kit is and a amp upside down in the trunk on the right side(a wood board between the amp & steel lid). Quit OK actually, but the basrespons was not so good (as all mouting of this type) AND I wanted the orginal lid.

I then built myself a customsize 28 litre (netto volyme) vented/ported 4:th bandbass box and used 1 JBL woofer(not easy either) placed on the right side and put back the orginallid. Now the basrespns is better but due to the placement the bas is not so close as before.

Summary, if you want something really good (both above is OK though), i.e a person who likes good quality music (with bass) should build a box and put it directly underneth the read lid and mount ports to the coupe as H20mobius did.

If you want a picture of the box+amp send me an email at: fun_4_y@yahoo.com . If many people wants the picture I will put it on my homepage...

I have a 10" fosgate sub in a bandpass enclosure and ran the port through the first aid lid. I have a 35w MTX amp and it pounds. I have found that the box needs to be professionaly built because of the physics involved.

Also another mounting option on the W124 (and many other MB) is to mount the sub in the spare wheel well. (Inside the spare wheel) Cut some MDF to cover the whole section, cut the hole out for the sub and mount it in there. ;-) No wasted space, although you do lose the storage area in the wheel.

I've done this with my 12" NHT (pictures coming soon, I promise!!)

It makes changing the wheel a bit more of a task, but its a reasonable trade off. Any sub which requires an enclosure of around 10 litres should work fine ;-)
