To all:
Currently, my 16v has a subpar sounding stereo system, and I want a better one. However, I am not of the audiophile set that demands auditory excellence. Translation: I want a good sounding stereo without spending thousands of dollars. I think my problem lies in the speakers. Namely, there is no bass. I am told that the stereo is high quality (an Eclipse 5331 ESN High-Power CD Reciever), but the previous owner might have stopped there. The speakers are very tweety, and sound good when playing acustical music. Otherwise, I find myself very dissapointed with any other type of music. I am aware that the rear deck can be taken out and two free-air 8"s can be installed. Basically, what I need is a stage-by-stage method to deliver the stereo system I want, so I don't have to unload a buch of cash all at once.
Any help would be appreciated.

What sort of music do you listen to? Installing a sub without an amp can really mess things up (blow your headunit). What I would do is get some better speakers up front first... I presume the 16v has door speakers of somesort. You might want to look into putting better ones in, and use Dynamat or something to deaden the insides of the doors. This should give you a lot more 'oomph' up front which is a good thing. You wouldnt *need* an amp, but if you decide to install one later, theyd sound even better.

Once you have an amp, you can then look at getting some subs.

The person who sold me the car had an awesome system in another 16v, but it cost upwards of $3,000. He mainly or exclusively used Boston Acoustic speakers up front, and I think used Kicker subs. Anyway, which brands do you suggest, or should I try to recreate what I have heard? By the way, I listen to various genres of music-including talk radio- so a system that sounds good playing anything is my aim (basically, what is in my c280 [factory system]). I don't think the speakers in the front sound bad, I will take them out this weekend to determine the brand--maybe they are high quality, I don't know. Also, you mentioned getting a amp. Could it be that this is my main problem? If I were to leave the front speakers alone, what type or brand of speakers would you suggest I use in the original rear deck? I don't know what size they are, but from what I remember, they don't look too big.
