My '90 300SEL has a Becker Grand Prix and I would like to upgrade to the new style Becker with CD or CD changer control. Has anyone done this? Also would like to replace rear deck and door panel speakers to better quality. Would like to just drop them in if possible. I know there must be replacments of some kind. Also I read somewhere this model came with an amp. Does it? where is it if so? Any help would be great.
PS. Audio forum,....great idea!!

Amp is probably behind one of the panels in the trunk ;-)

Any reason for going for Becker equipment? You'll probablky get better vfm with Alpine/Sony/Pioneer etc.

As for door speakers what quality were you looking for? For quality you might want to replace the in dash speakers aswell. Adamou has told me about some stunning coaxial speakers (Pioneer?) with swivel tweeters so you can get the best possible imaging. (i.e. not straight upwards like most Benz do)

Anyway, I need to stop now as I have a dash ripped apart (redoing the midrange drivers into the dash)

Take care!

You will get in trouble with the rear deck speakers. They have a special shape and they are directly fixed to the body of the car. If I am correct, they are 17cm of diameter. They are only woofers.
The Pioneer speakers I have bought are giving an extremly good quality of sound for their price. The tweeter in it is adjustable so you can direct the sound wherever you want. I have fixed them yesterday and am amazed by them! They are the THS-173 model (the only ones I would recommend you from Pioneer).
You will have to buy an adaptor to fix your speakers (i don't know where you can get such thing). The grill can be removed by pulling it horizontally to you. Apply some force...
The amp must be located behind the left panel in the trunk. (can't really tell you because the European model differs quite a lot from the USA one).
For the head unit, I would say the same thing as Brian...

The reason I would like to stay with OEM is to keep it looking original. This way I can utilize the factory wires and plugs, easy in out. The Radio now turns itself louder as speed increases and I would like to keep that. As for speakers anything that will fit factory holes is fine, but real good quality. The rear has woofer and tweeters the doors the same and the dash I am not sure. I am surprised to hear this model has an AMP! any info on this? number of channels? power rating?

The front speakers in the dash, (if they are the same as the Euro model ones), are little tweeters but with some bass reflex in them. They actually suck because at high volumes, they touch the protection cover. They are mounted on a quite big plastic triangular support. I would suggest you to put some good tweeters only in the dash...

1990 300 E 2.6 - Replace radio with JVC-HDR1

I wanted to know if a becker 1480 head unit could be replaced with a newer head unit, maybe a JVC KD-HDR1. Besides the new harness and fader control splicing, is there any need to rewire anything to the amp/speakers/antenna? I have located the amp in my trunk, and hope that it can remain unaltered. Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Also pictures, (i'm new to replacing audio equipment in cars)....Thanks.

BTW: Do u know how to splice the fader control, in order to route it to the new head unit?
