New Stereo for 77 240D

So I finally got around to installing the new stereo in my 240D last weekend and I must say it was pretty simple. I decided to run all new speaker wires just in case one day I decide to have my Becker refurbished. I ran a 12v line direct from the battery to the stereo since it was advised by some other members and the early W123 cars didn't have a constant 12v at the radio. I had previously installed new speakers in the dash however they caused the stock grilles to not fit as they should. I found that the grilles from a later model W123 fit without any modifications because they were flat on the speaker side and the stock 77 grilles had some fins that reduced the clearance just enough. Anyway here are some pictures of the finished product.

speaker grill difference

Can you post pics of the difference in speaker grills?
I am getting ready to install all modern equipment in my '77 300D.

Also, did you need an in-line fuse for the 12v direct line, or does the modern head unit (radio) have a factory fuse capable of protecting it?

You can find DIN trim plates to cover the small gap around the edges of the radio. Like these:

final touch, blue dash lights?

Just wanted to share one last option: if you aren't overly concerned about the factory look and would like to improve those notoriously dim instrument lights...I enjoy the improvement of 2 small LED stick-on bulbs!
That provide plenty of non-harsh light, way more than even the improved bulbs in the factory cluster could ever do.
And this set can be found in Wally-world's auto accessory isle for around $10.
They plus into the cigar lighter when needed and best of all: they come in BLUE, a good match to your radio style.

I ran the wire under the hump's carpet and up behind the instrument panel, stuck the LEDs on the clear plastic directly in front on where the factory bulbs shine out, and directed them down on the gauges with very little glare. Want to see a nighttime pic?

Any other tricks to virgin wiring for a new radio system?

PS. send me a pic of your OE seatbelt

and easier way would be to hard wire them directly to the circuit that operates the lights, then you'll also have intensity control and function as normal cluster lights.
