Hello, I'm looking to mount some A|D|S 5 1/4" woofers from a component set in my 1990 300E's doors...of course the 124 chassis didn't come with OEM door speakers until 94 so it's going to have to be a custom job. The speaker is approximately 2.8" deep from the bottom of the magnet to the lip of its bracket...I'd rather not mount it in the "dead area" towards the behind the map pocket going towards the rear of the car...the ideal spot would be in the large, clear area of leather trim towards the front of the car, near the hinge. I know it'll probably end up as a "try it and find out" situation, but anyone with prior experience that could help me out with measurements would be greatly appreciated. Happy Holidays!!

Chris, I dont know how much room there is behind there, but in all honesty, you dont need that much room. If you think about it, you have about 6 inches of room between where you want to mount the speaker, and where your leg would be. All you need is a hole into the door for the air, then build a series of mounting rings to extend the speaker away from the door... My only question with the whole thing would be, how heavy are the speakers? Theres not much to get a firm grip of on that trim, and the speaker may sag.
Since your car has black leather, and I think it has electric seats, no? Why dont you go for this option... make some triangular wedge boxes and mount the infront of the seats, almost like foot rests on a recliner chair. That way you can get huge bass up front. Check out Gary Handas BMW on the link below: http://www.netcomuk.co.uk/~ghanda/ The reason for requiring electric seats is that with a box like this you lose access to manual controls. Let me know what you think.. Bri ------------------ Brian Drought 1991 300CE http://www.users.globalnet.co.uk/~drought/ ICQ: 2180069 |

I mounted 6.5" Boston Acoustics woofers in my '88 300TE front doors. To give you an idea as to exactly where, here are a few measurements (to the center of the speaker):
- Center of speaker, height-wise, is directly in line with seam where the door pocket meets the front of the door panel (where they sort-of come to a point); - Measuring back from that same seam (measuring from the outside row of fake stitching), the center of the speaker is 4.5" back, with its center point just in front of the tip of the chrome door latch (if you were to drop a line straight down) - Measuring down from the horizontal bottom edge of the chrome door latch, center of speaker is 6.0" I'd help you with a photo, but one of my young children seems to have stashed the camera somewhere. If I find it I'll get a photo off ot you. Good luck! ------------------ Best regards, Michael '92 500E '88 300TE |
