w124 AM reception not working

I'm getting FM reception fine, but the AM stations are not coming in consistently. They generally are extremely fuzzy (as though there were no antenna at all). Sometimes if I turn the radio off and then back on (with the antenna cycling down/up at the same time), they'll come back in but not consistently. I can switch over to an FM station and there are no issues at all.

Any thoughts/things to check out?

the antenna could the the issue. fm doesn't need the antenna mast to be up in order for reception, am wants it all the way up. maybe something wrong with your mast.

Thanks for the quick response, punkinfair....I just replaced the antenna with a new Hirschmann and I had the same problem with the old antenna, but always assumed it was because the motor kept going out on me. The mast definitely extends fully, so I'm wondering if it could be an issue with the connection where the wire from the radio comes into the motor? Nothing looks out of place and it seems to screw in all of the way, can you think of anything that I may be missing there?

Sorry, that was dumb to leave that out of the original post. It's an 87 300D with a Becker Grand Prix radio....which I believe is the original.
