Whould it do any good to replace ONLY the
large speakers in the rear of a 99 300TD with Bose radio system?

If so replace with what?

Went to visit my local car audio installer, and now I can answer my own question.

The answer is yes ..BUT.

The “But”, he says, is the fact that the Amp is IN the speaker.

You can change the speaker for $200 (fair but not great speakers)

But you have to add an Amp.. another $200 (fair but not great amp)

Not to mention another $200 labor.

It might sound better, but $600 better? I don’t know

Hmm, I dont hink the amp is in the speakers... I think you'll find the amp will be behind one of the panels in the rear. What improvement in sound are you after? More bass/better imaging/more realistic midrange/more volume? Let us know what you're after and we can come up with a solution ;-)

Theres lots of options here...

To me, the Bose system sounds like there is a heavy cloth between the speaker and me. There is little depth to the sound stage. The instruments are not distinct and separate. Symbols have a flat sound, The sibilant sounds in speech are muted. The low end sounds like it is all around 100 Hz. I would like to try (as a first step) changing just the rear speakers. I want a brighter, crisper sound. I can live, for now, with the low end as it is. Would a simple swapout of rear speakers do the trick?

If its soundstage you're after, I seriously suggest attacking the front speakers. You'll never get good soundstage/detail out of rear speakers as your ears were never deisgned that way. Perhaps a decent set of component speakers up front might be the best option, although not as easy as the rear speakers.

Although tone controls are generally detrimental to the sound, you might find that tweaking them may give a crisper note to instruments.. a bit more treble perhaps.

Have fun!

Richard U, I believe that the sound dealer was trying to "rip you off" or he is just dumb. The amplifiers are not in the speakers! Do a search of speakers in this forum. It appears most guys are replacing their speakers, including the rear with MB quartz. I want to upgrade my speakers also.

Went to a high class audio place, the guy flat out told me he could sell me new speakers, but I would not be happy with them.

Bottom line...Swap out the radio with a new system, or be happy with what you got

Why wouldn't be happy with them?!? Which brand of speakers are they?
If you want to change your speakers go for some MacAudio, Magnat, DLS, Crunch or MB Quart...

By the way your local dealer should go to sleep and change his job...

"He" says the BOSE system does not take kindly to changeing speakers...the results are not worth it...

Would like to hear from anyone who has made a speaker only change with the Bose system.

How did it work for you?

Richard U, have you done that search on speakers yet. The consensus of many on this board is that the BOSE speakers are crap! You can buy any speaker you want, however the German brand MB Quartz is a great place to start. They are considered more musical and higher fidelity. The information that you have been getting from local stores has perplex me and other members that have responded. Your car has the Alpine AM/FM/Cassette/Phone head unit with Fiber Optic wiring. Replacing the Head Unit and rewiring the car with the loss of CD changer is too expensive. To get better sound from any system you upgrade the speakers and amplifiers and not just the head unit. The head unit is basically a Preamp and any sonic improvements will lie with the speakers, crossovers, equalizers and Amplifiers. I am waiting to blow my Bose speakers so I can replace them with MB Quartz, Alpine or even Soundstream.
