300CE No FM reception
Hi everybody,
Longtime reader, but haven't posted in a long time. I have a 93 300CE which I've owned for about 10 years now and dearly love. It has the two piece Becker radio, factory CD player, active bass speakers and amps and maybe had the cell phone. I think it may have had the phone because of the splitter on the antenna and the extra grey wire with the round plug to the antenna. The CD player and phone are long gone. The radio has always worked fine and sounded great. I have had occasional trouble with the antenna, which I repaired by cleaning the contacts on the circuit board, cleaning and lubing. Finally last week, the antenna wouldn't extend at all and the motor would not run jumped to the battery, so I installed a new Hirschman antenna, which works fine, but now I have no FM reception at all. Just soft fuzz. AM works perfect. Even when the old antenna wouldn't extend, I could get a few FM stations. Even unhooking the antenna lead and touching it with a finger would get something. Now, nothing. I've searched this and other forums over the last couple of days and printed out wiring diagrams. I added the grey phone wire to the Hirschman plug as they instruct and called Hirschman. I pulled out the radio control unit in the truck and cleaned contacts, but didn't see anything. The antenna lead into that box has always been loose, but wiggling it doesn't do anything. I checked power to the antenna and splitter. The only other thing I can think of that's happened is that a tree fell on the rear pass quarter, trunk and roof. My Mercedes dealer did the body work, painted it and undercoated inside the quarter panel. They sprayed undercoating on the two active amps and harness. I don't see anything obvious but who knows? I've run out of ideas. Any help would greatly be appreciated! Thanks |

Still have the old antenna? Put it back in and see if you get the same "few FM stations."
A splitter with uninstalled and possibly damaged components makes troubleshooting tougher. Is there a powered amplifier? Have you checked ALL fuses? Is there any chance you swapped leads on the splitter and you're feeding a now-removed car phone? Have you verified the antenna lead at the back of the radio to positively ID the radio antenna lead and the phone lead? Are you using the L/D option on the radio to suppress some stations? Pictures of the components and wires in question may help. Have you contacted Becker? There's a sticky at the top of the Audio forum. |
