Hello Everyone, I am new here. I just wanted to ask you guys if you could help me with my audio problem.
I have a '92 500 SEL and it did not come with a CD changer. I wanted to get a new cd changer and a new FM/Tape Deck for it. At first, I was looking for an OEM unit. I am considering buying a Becker package. It comes with a 10Disc CD changer and a new Deck for 630.00. Is this a good price? Is there anything else that is better that is not very expensive? Thank you, Mital [This message has been edited by Da_Mit (edited 12-13-1999).] |

The world is your oyster as they say...
I dont know exact US prices/models, but Sony, Pioneer, Alpine etc all have some really good CD changer packages for much less than $630. Depends if you like he sytling really.... very different to the 'factory' look of the becker units. Da_Mit,
I really recommend you to go for aftermarket ones. OEM decks usually are not bad, but not great either. Get a decent deck can really improve the sound alot...... I would recommend you to go and have a look at Pioneer's choice because they make some superb wood imitation that makes your radio look like it is in the dash.
Otherwise if the look doesn't not really matter, I would suggest you to go for a Clarion or an Alpine set. ------------------ ------------------------------------- WEB Site : http://www.adamou.dpn.ch A.S.C. 1999 ------------------------------------- |

Check out the Nakamichi systems. They don't have silly video arcade displays like most aftermarket units, and the quality is up to or beyond Mercedes standards.

I recently upgraded the stereo on my G-Wagen. Check Crutchfield online. Had a Blaupunkt tape deck and added the 10 disc changer, sony amp and Cerwin Vega speakers. Sounds great, has a remote, disc naming, radio station naming and a nifty scrolling message when its turned on. Disc changer was $230 and high power Blaupunkt Colorado tape deck is $180. Replace the speakers and you'll really have a great system! Best of all its German like the rest of the car!

I've put Alpine head units in both of my Benzes...they have been truly dependable (as have my last 3 Alpines), work great, and if you've heard one recently the radio is almost CD quality...truly amazing that an FM station can sound that good.
Nowadays there are tons of great values, so pick a look you like from one of the reputable manufacturers and you'll be set. ------------------ Best regards, Michael '92 500E '88 300TE |

Brands I can *personally* recommend are:
Pioneer Blaupunkt Kenwood Sony Alpine Nakamichi All are about as reliable as you can get... Pioneer have some pretty good 'MOSFET' headunits with decent power ratings. Bri ------------------ Brian Drought 1991 300CE http://www.users.globalnet.co.uk/~drought/ ICQ: 2180069 |
