Question antenna help

The antenna on my '90 300E is broken and I'd like to get a look at the problem. How do I remove the grey panel on the left wall of the trunk,to get to it? What is the flap/opening on the forward upper part of the panel?? Any help is appreciated!!

Normally you do not need to remove the assembly if the mask is broken or snapped.

At this point,I can't get hold of the antenna...it's gone down, out of sight, beneath the grommet, into the fender. I'd like to remove the panel,to get to it and see what's left of it,etc..

Just in the process of this. The grey panel is simply force fit into place. It is essentially stiff carpeting. Simply bend it a bit to pull it free from the top. To remove the antenna - just a few bolts and plugs.

I sent mine to Becker in NJ for rehab - $120 for a re-build. I'll know in a couple of days how good it works. I also had an I-Pod jack fitted to the radio since I did not want to attempt to change out the factory radio setup and mess with the alarm system.

Unhappy

Thanks for the advice! I removed the panel. Some progress has been made. I've fished out the broken mast...no cable is attached to it. How do I remove the hard rubber grommet on top of the fender??? Then, how do I remove the motor? Is it bolted inside the trunk or just bolted to the nut on top of the fender??

Haven't had to deal with the grommets yet, the one I got from a parts car was rotten out, I'll be tackling that tomorrow. As for the assembly itself, held in by a screw at the bottom. Large phillips, probably have to push on the driver with one hand and turn to loosen it. Pull it down and out, unscrew signal to radio, unplug connector for power and done.

Opening the assembly itself isn't too bad. I found it easiest to pry up one of the long sides, work my way down around the rounded part, then finally do the two larger tabs at the flat top.

dbgrate, if the antenna motor runs when you turn the radio "On" and "Off" you may not need to remove the antenna mechanism from the trunk. With the mast removed, turn the radio "On" and see if the white nylon cable feeds out of the fender grommet ... be sure to note which direction the cable teeth are facing. If so, pull the entire cable out. Once you have a new mast, turn the radio "On", then feed the cable from the new mast through the fender grommet and turn the radio "Off". The antenna mechanism should rewind the new cable ... problem resolved.

Disassembling the antenna mechanism takes some patience so if you're forced to go that route take your time. The fender grommet is a force fit, and needs to be installed with the antenna mast removed. Typically there is a black trim piece that snaps on atop the fender after the antenna mast is in place.
