1997 S500 No Audio
The volume control on my 97 S500 is not working well. I bought the car a few days ago and it seemed fine, but today it wasn't quite loud enough so I turned the volume knob clockwise but it seemed to have very little effect. After awhile it seemed like turning it clockwise made the volume go down. I kept fooling with it and eventually I lost audio completely. It was the same on all bands, AM, FM, CD, weather band and cassette.
This evening I went back to it and I was able to get the audio to come back on by turning the volume control clockwise a little. It still acts odd so once I got the volume so I could hear it OK, I left well enough alone. Is the problem more likely the amplifier (Bose) or the volume potentiometer in the head unit. Thanks.

SOLVED!
I picked up a replacement head unit on eBay and my audio system now works perfectly. With the correct radio removal tools, also bought on eBay, the whole job took 10 minutes.
