static and antenna amplifers

I have a 2004 E320 Wagon that has suddenly developed static on the AM stations. There is only static when the car is actually moving not when the engine is running but the car is in park. Any ideas what could be causing this? My first guess is the antenna amplifer? Can the antenna amplifer be replaced with a non-oem amplifer and if so, any recommendations where to get one and the name of the unit?
Thanks, Desert

you're not gonna believe this, but the problem is the LF brake pad sensor! it causes static in some of the 211 chassis. i have seen several with that problem; and MB has what they call a "DTB" or dealer technical bulletin. the left front brake pad sensor creates interference in the AM radio band; the solution is to remove the sensor. some folks cut the wires off it and leave the plug in the socket to keep it from filling up with crud. but anyway, remove the brake pad sensor and your static will go away.
here's a question: why would you want to listen to AM anyway? nothin but $#!+ on AM.

I believe it except in this case it was the right rear brake pad wear sensor, the front pads still have at least 10K more on them. I'll replace the rear pads and the sensors all around just to be on the safe side. To answer your question, I am of the age where I still enjoy the music of the 40s, 50s, and 60s and you can only get them here in the Tucson area on AM. Thanks for your expert input...Desert
