W124 400E speakers (Becker 1432) pictures, and possible replacment.

I've never seen any postings of all the speakers that are in the W124 becker 1432 system (sedan with door speakers). So I took a few while I am in the process of removing an interior. Also thinking about what to do on the new 400E when I put in the grey interior.

speakers - door is 2 Ohm front is 4 Ohm (wrapped with additional coil and component - cap?) rear speaker has 2 integral tweeters (never heard that noted)

amps in the trunk

So head unit on the new 400E was replaced with a Sony. My thought is to replace the fronts with some Polk db401 speakers I have kicking around. From looking through this list it looks like I can power rear and door speakers - leads for rear from head unit to console fader and set fader full rear.

May look at getting some 5.25" Polk's for the rear as well, either db521 or db5251 where I could mount the tweeter in one of the original locations. Leave the door drivers as is.

Paul

Those rear speakers with tweeters are only installed in the "High Performance 10 Speaker" stereo system, found mainly in the 400E/E420, E500E, and Special Edition cars.

The standard no extra cost system had a paper cone only. That's why you "never heard that noted".

Also, you better search "Becker 1432" here to find out how to maintain power to one of those factory amps to keep power to the door bass speakers. Input to door bass speakers comes from a rear speaker lead at the fader.

And, don't forget about that surface rust in the trunk.

Thanks, I may just leave speakers as is for now, or at least doors and rears.

Seperate question and maybe a subject for another thread - if you are swapping interiors what wiring would you run fior future use? I will be swapping interiors so that would be an opportune time to add any future anticipated wiring - like leads to go from head unit to amps, new speaker lines etc. Just in case

From other posts it looks for now like I should check how the Sony is wired - then power front speakers off of the head unit then decode wires that go from fader to rear amps to run doors and rear speakers.

Like I said maybe I should start another thread.

All of the 1432 systems I've seen, including my own 91 300E, are paper coned, and all have the rear speakers with dual tweeter.
