hi...i just had an amp professionally installed two days ago in my 89 300e...the amp is fed by a line converter from my alpine deck, which doesnt have rca outputs... when i hooked up my brand new ppi sub to the amp, however, there was no sound whatsoever...i suspected that it might be a faulty sub so i connected a speaker i knew worked, and again to no avail...i am starting to suspect that it is my amp...i had bought it off my friend, since this is my first time ever putting in a system (if u can call a sub/amp combo a system)...the power and protect led's come on when the amp is turned on...how would i know if the amo is fried? if the amp fuse had blown on the amp, then wouldnt the unit not even turn on? the history of the amp is this: my friend told me that he pushed two 12" fosgates with this amp (50w rms x 2), he also had it connected in parallel to two 6x9s...what im thinkin is that this amp (coustic x210 2 channel 50rms) has no way of blowing out two fosgates, but instead the amp had fried when trying to power two 12" subs hooked in parallel with two 6x9's, with +6db boost...please let me know what you guys think..is it my amp that is broken? i dont feel like bringing the car in on saturday for service and having them charge me $30 just to tell me my amp is blown...i was suspecting that the install might have been at fault, but now im starting to think the amp as the culprit...please help...thanks....

There are 2 things possible
1) Wiring to sub is faulty (unlikely... you tried another speaker, and presumably another set of wires) 2) The amp is deep fried. If an amp blows its fuse, thats NOT a good sign. Fuses will only blow if the power supply or the output transistors are fried. Suggest you get it serviced or give it back to your buddy... most likely damaged by runnning that silly load. thanks bri...yeh the wires to the sub are brand new fosgate 12gauge, and i used a different set two the other test speakers as well...just a quick question...how extensive is the repair the blown amp? i paid 40 bucks for the amp, and really do not want to repair it for more than what i paid for...would rather get a new alpine or something....thanks for the advice...appreciate it...

So its the amp then.
Cost of repair? Close to $40 at the least. Id suggest cut your losses and treat you and your ears to a new amp. Strip the old one down and use it as decoration somewhere. A stripped down amp is a great conversation piece! Sorry I cant give you better news. Bri ------------------ Brian Drought 1991 300CE http://www.users.globalnet.co.uk/~drought/ ICQ: 2180069 |
