what would be the best way to install a sub one 12 or two 10's in the 300E?
I know somebody reccomended putting a 12 or something in the spare wheel well. That dosent make sense to me due to the fact that the trunk is totally air tight, and its so far away from the passenger compartment. plus you loose the spare. What about the trunk lining, won't that cover it up? I'm thining of a band pass box with 2 10" subs ported into the cabin through the rear speaker locations and then relocating a couple of 5 1/4 or 6 1/2 2-ways onto the rear deck would be best. I also would like to put 5 1/4 2-way's in the dash (replacing the 4 inchers) and then maybe 6 1/2's (should these be 2-way or not?) in the front doors (map pocket area). Too bad my 1990 does not have factory speaker locations in the doors (more work for me). althogh component setups are better due to more accurate immaging, I really dont want to install tweeters in non factoty locations. Would there be a need to install speakers in the rear doors too (if so, should these be 2 way or not)? I cant imagine anything bigger than 5 1/4's. I often carry rear passengers. So am I insane or what. Does this set up sound good (figurativly and literally) what do you think? ------------------ • Blizzak454 • Atlanta GA, USA 1990 300E 1989 BMW 735i blizzak454@webmail.bellsouth.net |

Well...
Make the trunk non air tight! Cut hole in rear deck/remove rear speakers. You dont loose the spare wheel either.. I've got 15" wheels, and Michaels got 17", and we both managed to put a 12" sub in the wheel well *WITH* the spare wheel. Trunk lining can br modified... a stanley knife can remove the white/grey weight, and still leave the coloued carpet which wont affect the sound. And the spare wheel is about 2ft furthur from your ears than the rear deck.... which when you're talking about 20ft wavelengths makes no difference at all! If you cant to put speakers in the map pockets you'll have to make an enclousre, you cant just put a speaker in there as the sound from the back of the speaker can get to your ears...not good. I'll leave it to Michael or someone else on the rear speakers... as far as I'm concerned, rear speakers are evil... ;-) Now..to get back to planning my new install (new car) Bri ------------------ Brian Drought 1991 300CE 2000 A170-CDI http://www.users.globalnet.co.uk/~drought/ ICQ: 2180069 |

As for front speakers in a 300E, I had enclosures built for the doors (6.5" BA components. I then installed the tweeters in the stock dash openings. In the rear you can fit 5.25" speakers in the facory locations and even have room left over for the tweaters , and maintain a stealthy installation by using the factory grills. As for the subs I had a custom sealed box built for 2 12" subs firing upward into the opening where the medical kit once resided. Amps are mounted to box and box is bolted to several locations within the trunk (from inside the box) to keep it stationary (in more ways then one).
