Please recommend radio

I have a 1977 350 SLC Euro that had its radio stolen.
I want to replace it but I do not like all the modern units with flashing lights and revolving symbols.
Can anyone recommend a unit with standard features preferrable with a wood grain finish. Beckers have a nice looking unit but I don't think it is available in Europe and certainly not here is St. Petersburg Russia.

All advice appreciated

Boy, that's a tough one Ed. Especially if you're looking for wood grain finish. Seems like I remember Poineer units a few years ago could have a carbon-fiber or wood faceplate, but I haven't seen any since

I'm looking for a new head unit myself, and a good one that blends harmoniously with the understated interior of my W124 (I hate the techno light-show that permeates the current selections). Nakamichi seems to make the best in both performance and looks from what I've found. See www.nakamichi.com. Also, I've seen their decks on ebay for considerably cheaper than full retail price.

I've seen Denon units too, that looked very nice for the interiors of MB's (but again, no wood trim), but I don't think they make car audio products anymore.

This is assuming of course, you would put something Japanese in your car!:p And you have a beautiful model by the way!

My 2 cents...

Blaupunkt has a plain model availablr thru Cruthfield!

Take a look. I didn't want gaudy either.

I bought the Honolulu and it really blends in nice!

I would definitely consider the Blaupunkt as well. They generally build a nice black finish similar in appearance to the controls found on the dash. Better yet the lighting matches the Mercedes dash perfectly and...... it doesn't cost alot.

I haven't heard very good things about the recent Nakamichi decks. Supposedly the car audio division was sold out 7 years ago and their quality has dropped considerably. They look good in the catalogs as I recall but in person they are flimsy. Of course that was a couple of years ago when I was looking for a new deck and this may have changed.

I also noticed a few people selling the Becker tape decks on this site. I haven't compared side by side but if your looking for a good this would be another option.

you can add a wood grain finish.

I boguht some wood grain laminate from ebay. you stick it on its basically a big wood grain sticker.

I used it on my alpine. See pics int he nakamichi vs alpine thread to see before and after. :)

Otherwise go for the best radio you can afford. IF looks are a concern, then add that to your criteria.
