Putting speakers in the doors is not easy if you dont have speaker holes (and the fact its an 85 suggests you dont!)

I know Michael has sucessfully put speakers in the doors of his 300TE, but its not something for the faint hearted.

If you want lows, an easier solution would be a bass tube in the back seat foot space?

This is what I have done on my 1990 190E 2.6 (should pretty much be the same as yours):

Blaupunkt Houston HU

Pioneer digital EQ (where cassette holder once resided, above HU)

Audiobahn 4" coaxs in dash

Audiobahn 4 x 10" coaxs in plastic front door map pocket

Boss 6.5" separates - 6.5" mid-bass in hole cut into lower rear of front door panel, tweeter mounted on black plastic trim piece concealing side mirror mounts

Audiobahn 6.5" coaxs in rear parcel shelf

Pioneer 8" free-air subs in MDF panel where first aid kit once resided (rear parcel shelf)

External amps for everything except dash speakers (run by HU)

Sound, lows - pretty damn good.

thanks for all the information
i have one more question that may sound really stupid
how do you wire the speakers in the door
where does the wiring go
i cant figure out how to put it in the actual door so that the wires are hidden and secure

Relatively easy:

remove plastic kick panel cover

pop loose the rubber sleeve that is between the front door and body (visible when door open)

remove door panel

route wires from kick panel opening, through rubber sleeve, then into inner part of door

***also, this is the time to plan exactly where to cut holes for speakers, determine mounting depth etc...

Have you ever thought of building kick panels? I don't know how much space you have, but you may be able to fit a 5.25" or even 6.5" component system in there. You can get this done at a shop for about $500, or you can do it yourself (I probably spent $60 building mine). I would also recommend getting a sub, but that all depends on how much you're willing to spend.

I agree with Brian. Do not try to put spekers in your 190E doors. For moderate cost youcan upgrade your four oe speakers with today technology coaxial ones of similar size. Driven by a CD head unit with a four channel amplifier, your ears will thank you! Make sure your head unit has outputs for a second amplifier to drive the subwoofer. Wow!
