Hi all,
I was poking around my stereo system on my 1992 400e this evening. I am purchasing a new stereo and speakers and wanted to verify what will fit in the factory locations. When I removed the two front speakers, they are 4 inch by the way, I saw a capacitor inline with the speaker. I knew that this was inplace to act as a crossover for the small 4in speaker. I figured that since I will be replacing everything, why not remove it and see how it sounds. Well a simple snip and about 10 seconds of soldering and WOW. I could not believe how much better the stereo sounded. The speaker sounded much better. The capacitor was a 33uf, so based that this was a simple 4 ohm 6dB crossover, I figured that the crossover point was around 1.1k or 1.2k Hz. If you plan on keeping your stock "premium" Bekker tape deck, you might want to give this a try. Simple operation, but the results are very nice. The speakers have a rubber surround, so they should be able to handle the extra bass with no problem. Thought I would just share with everyone my discovery for the night. -David |
ACK NO!! DONT DO THIS !
The main speaker gets full range.... what that capacitor for, is, yes, a high pass filter at 1.1 - 1.2K.... for the TWEETER. Look in the middle of the speaker, and its a coaxial device with a tweeter in there. 1.2K is far too high of a crossover point for just a 4in driver, it must be for the little tweeter in there. Hate to say it bud, but your tweets are probably roasted. Bri ------------------ Brian Drought 1991 300CE 2000 A170-CDI http://www.users.globalnet.co.uk/~drought/ ICQ: 2180069 |
Brian,
Nope, the speaker is NOT a coaxial speaker. Just a simple full range driver. The cap is (or was) inline with the main speaker input. But EVEN IF this was a coaxial speaker, the cap for the tweater would STILL be located further inside the speaker so it would only filter the lows to the tweeter and not to the mid/bass driver as well. This is a US Spec 400e, so the stereo system may be different in the UK. But still, the location of the cap would still only pertain to the mid/bass driver. Thanks for your concern, but I do know what I am doing. I don't just remove things without proper analysis of the affect it will cause. -David |
Hmmmmmm odd that a 4in driver would have a 1.1K highpass.... its not gonna be doing a lot above about 900-1Khz.
The crossover cap for co-ax tweeters is often glued to the side of the speaker, and daisy chain off the main terminals, thats what it sounded like you removed. Sorry for the misunderstanding... Bri |
Brian,
No problem mate! It is difficult to explain things in such few words. Cheers! -David |
