OK, I'm resigned to rewiring... I've got the fronts done, what's the easiest/best way to get speaker wires to the rear, along with the antenna wire extension? I've gotten the bottom of the rear seat out (no big deal!), how do I get the wires into the trunk?? How do I remove the seat back, if that's the way in?
Thanks again for all the help. Bill Streep '92 300E '57 190SL |

Look at the bottom of the back of the seat, basically where your spine would be if it went down another six inches. Should be some 8mm (or 10mm) hex bolts. Removes them, and the whole back should lift up about 4 inches and out.
Yes, the holes are up there, near the seatbelt reels. Bri ------------------ Brian Drought 1991 300CE 2000 A170-CDI http://www.users.globalnet.co.uk/~drought/ ICQ: 2180069 |

I routed the wires thusly:
1) under the dash (there are some plastic panels that are attached by screws and tabs), 2) behind the front side kick panels (screwed in and held by the door seal), 3) under the front door sills (The plastic door sills will pop up if you use a wide pry bar starting at one end. There is a channel in the sill that you can run the wires in. I imagine that there is a way to run them under the carpet or trans tunnel somewhere, but the sills looked to be the easiest to me.), 4) behind the front shoulder belt/pillar (B pillar? - just loosen two screws and door seals and pull trim out at bottom enough to pass wires behind), 5) under the rear door sills, 6) under the seat bottom, 7) behind the rear seat back (The rear seat back has 3 fasteners on my 1990 300E....yours may be different...one each on the lower corners near the doors, and one up under the middle pull-down armrest...8 mm if I remember correctly. After you get the fasteners out, the back lifts up out of some tabs-into-slots arrangement at the upper back edge.) I put the power and control wires down the right side and the speaker wires down the left side. Note: I installed a CD-changer and powered sub-woofer in the trunk...omit the right side if you only have speaker wires to run. Hope this is clear enough and helps. ------------------ Steve 1979 240D 1990 300E [This message has been edited by dakota (edited 09-26-2000).] |

I recently did this job on my w126, I imagine that yours would be pretty similar. If you've got the bottom portion of the seat off, go to the trunk and remove the lining on the side that you have run the wires. There should be three metal clips along the opening to the trunk, and one screw near the tail light. If you look up around where the top of the seat back would be there should be a rubber grommet with some factory wires running through it. I just ran a snake (well, a coat hanger, actually) through that hole and it came out the bottom of the seat back where the seat bottom would meet. Next just use electrical tape to connect your wiring to the snake, go back to the trunk and pull it through!
