Antenna Help

Hi,

Ive been reading up about replacing the enitre antenna setup on the forums. I have a 1983 300D that nees a new one. The motor doesnt work, the shaft is broken, and Im just going to replace the whole thing. I just have some questions:

-Is the Hirschmann antenna sold here in fastlane one of these that is talked a lot about here on the forums that does not have proper control, in that it will go up and down with the radio but does not utilize the button on the dash? (I have the original becker europs cassette deck)

-Regardless of the type that I get, what is the method to get the wires off the old one and onto the new one? Do they solder or use something else?

-If I was to get it done at the dealer, would that replacement be able to be controlled by the dash button? My main concern is to maintain OEM function in that it goes up with the radio power, and can also be controlled by the button on the dash to have it go up or down according to need.

-Assuming that the one that is sold at the dealer does maintain all the functions, not just the up/down with radio power, what is the part number for this item? If it isnt correct, then what is the part number for the power antenna for this car, so I have a reference for when I try to deal with MB parts rebuilders and recyclers.

Thanks very much

I just put in a $7.00 one from Walmart and it works great. That is, it worked great until I ran through a car wash and snapped it off for the 2nd time since I bought my "new" car. Talk about being brain dead. I get so excited to see the car shined up with the new alloys and all I totally forget about the new antenna.

Of course, you forfeit the up/down ability of the antenna and have to unscrew it but its black and looks kind of cool.

i have an 83 300SD, the antenna that is in my car is one of the 30 dollar k-mart power antennas. It goes up and down with the radio, OR i can put it up or down with the switch, but it is eaither fully up or fully down, no midway. If you want i can look at how mine is rigged up.

on mine, it looks quite simple. I'll have to double check it all, but going from memory here is how it is hooked up in my s-class diesel, it may be differant for the 123 chassis. Where the old antenna plugs in there is a 6 port female plug. The blue or green( i forget which) goes to the top left port, and the other goes to the top right. Next, all you need to do is ground the antenna. It is held in place with that bendable metal strips, the best way i can describe them is a perforated metal strip. it is bent in place to hold the base up. Never had any problems with it, which is more then i can say about the oem ones on our other acuras.

When I broke off the mast on my Hirshmann months ago, I replaced it with a manual antennea from Pep Boys. About $10-12 or so. My original fancy one never retracted all the way, hence the broken mast in a car wash. The new one manually pushes all the way DOWN, when I want it to. I was really annoyed by the automatic antennea going up and down whenever I turned the key on.

I replaced the Becker with a cheap $80 Kenwood cassette unit. No problem and much better tuning. The Becker was probably great when new; but, digital tuning means that the station locks in. Now, if the idiots that design "modern" radios would ever learn something about "ergonomics."
