Question 6.5" speakers for W123?

Hi,

Does anyone know whether or not 6.5" speakers could be fitted in the rear deck of a W123?
I searched and found many people using 5.25" by just enlarging the hole a little. I think I currently have 5.25" speakers in the back, they just suck.
I'm thinking that 6.5" (a pair) would give out decent bass.
Thanks

It can be done it just takes modifications. Why don't you go for a subwoofer instead?

Can I do it easily myself? I'm thinking that if all I have to do is enlarge the opening, I can cut it open myself using a knife or something right? I have Dremel actually I could use that too.

I don't wanna go with a subwoofer because of space. Unless I can place it somewhere where it wouldn't decrease trunk space by much. I'm actually thinking of getting a 10" Subwoofer, but the labor's gonna kill me...
so I'm just sticking to normal speakers and a decent head unit + changer...
just something to replace the horrible Alpine unit that is in there. I replaced the 3.5" speakers that were in the dash with 4" Pioneers. They made quite a substantial improvement...

Unless you raise up the 6.5" speakers then you will not only need to cut the cardboard /carpet you will need to cut the steel. I use a nibbler or an air saw to do so. The other thing I do is cut 3 or 4 1" holes into the trunk compartment below the speaker so the 6.5 speaker can have a larger enclosure(the space under the speaker is too small) and this mod will make a very noticiable difference in low freq response.

I put in 6.5" in the back without cutting away any steel. Maybe I got lucky. They were Pioneer's and I used a simple box cutter to whittle away at the rear deck. It was kind of a pain but the results were worth it. I found that bass response wasn't nearly what I expected so I added a self powered Kicker sub in the trunk. Much better.

so I'm guessing that if I can find 6.5" speakers that are not very thick, I might be able to put 'em in without modifying the steel frame, yeah?

I think I'll just buy 5.25" and put a 10" sub somewhere...
or get one of those self powered subs...

I went ahead and bought a pair of Pioneer 6.5" speakers. They are actually thinner than the 5.25" that were already in the car...
I just need to cut out the rear deck...

Now the challenging bit..

Does any of you have an idea on drilling a hole when the rear window's in the way?
I don't really wanna take the rear windows off just for speakers...

I need like a universal joint for the drill bit.. but i dont think there exists such a thing...

BTW, the bass response is awesome!
These 6.5" make a huge difference!

I use a right angle drill, maybe rent one to do it. I also recomend you take the carpeted panel out behind the gas tank so you can see what you are doing. There are plastic vacume lines that run under the metal that can be damaged if you don't move them first.

Thanks for all the help, I finished installing them and they sound awesome!
I'm amazed at just how much bass is given out by the 6.5"!

Not to mention that I have a very crappy head unit. However, I think it can wait...

They're Pioneer TS-1661 - I'm pretty sure that I could've fit the more expensive Pioneer 'oversized' 6.5" speakers (that's what they call 'em)
However they are also more expensive.

This is good enough for me. I don't think that I'll add a subwoofer. I don't wanna rock the cars next to me anyway... what the hell's the point!?@#

Anyway,

My headunit is pretty damn old (it has dials and stuff)
I don't know what the output is, but it must be pretty damn low.
I'm guessing less than 15Wx4. (Peak)
They are also divided (through the console fader), so... 2-5W I guess. [RMS]
