Adding CD changer 1992 500SL
Hi All-
I have the stock head unit (Becker) in my R129. Today I went to a local car stereo store to get a bid on adding a Alpine changer. I thought that I simply needed adapter cables and could add the Alpine unit (around $400 total). The dealer tells me I need a number of cables and some sort of "brain unit" as well. The total price quoted was $800-900. Is this reasonable? Are they correct? Thanks for your help! Scott |
$800-900 | What kinda Head unit are you getting for that money?
You could buy Nakamichi's CD-45Z for $300-$350 and a CD-Changer. They could be right, I'm not sure what kind of head unit the '92 500SL has. If it has CD - Changer controls, then you could just add an MB CD Changer (costs a lot of money though) |
The 92 129 has a becker 1492 radio that requires a mbz interface module@ $150.00 three hook up cables @$150.00 and the cd changer@$250.00 + labor to install and a bracket. I have it all if you want it.

Hey Scott-
If I were to simply replace he components and start from scratch, what would you suggest for a "reasonable" system? Price? |
I would reccomend at least a subwoofer a 5 ch amp and front sep. I would say from 2 to 5K easily depending on the labor rate in your area. I am finishing one in my shop now and it is @ 5K plus a bit to fix the car and remove the previous aftermarket system.
