W202 C230 rear shelf speakers and bass response

Just upgraded my previous aftermarket HU to a new Alpine bluetooth deck so I can get phone calls without taking out my phone. I've noticed that the bass response isn't as good as with my old Alpine (149BT vs my old 9883), even after playing around with the bass and the parametric eq.

Sitting in the back seat the woofers seem to put out a decent amount of sound, even though it isn't great quality sound. Would replacing them make much of a difference for the cost and effort? Also, anyone know why they point into the trunk? Do they have phase issues with the rest of the speakers? (I wonder if swapping the polarity on the rear speakers would make a difference)
