w124 door speaker upgrade query

Has anyone replaced the original speaker with aftermarket 6-1/2 units, and if so, how did you resolve the problems that top-mounting a speaker into the factory box creates? Most candidate speakers I've found will not recess, but
effectively add to depth of speaker box by their rolled edge and/or rubber
surround. This alters the box's relation to the upholstery panel, and may
nudge it into the path of window glass when lowered. Any guidance appreciated.

I added Image Dynamics midbasses in the door, which have a HUGE magnet and obviously wouldn't fit in the pod as-is. If you look at the speaker pod closely, you can find screws around the perimeter which will let you separate the pod into two pieces:

At that point, you can mount the new speaker to the front face of the pod. To get the magnet away from the window, I added a couple washers to the front two mounting points of the pod:

As it sits, the window just barely clears the speaker magnet, which is perfect, because the door panel is able to still fit just fine.

EDIT: Note that I have / had the High Performance audio system in my W124. I've not seen the Active Bass speaker pods, so I don't know for sure if they're identical.

Thanks a million--or perhaps two million, one per door. My contemplated speakers' magnets actually should clear the rear segment of the pod, if narrowly. That you were able to shim the pod a bit toward the door panel, even with the topmost part of the speaker standing proud of the pod rather than recessed into it, factory-style, and still have enough clearance to get the panel back on means I should be copasetic when I get around to this. I bought some used pods to play with before taking everything apart, and they have a partly different part number than yours, and quite possibly a different
number from those in my car, but they're visually identical so far as I can tell. I think I supposedly have the 'active bass' system; it's whatever came with 'Special Edition' sedans in 95. Thanks very much, again.
