Nakamichi CD45z

I think I just found the right sound system for my Merc. I'm thinking about the Nakamichi CD45z player with a 5 disc changer.
Does anyone know if it will be able to play CD-R recordable CD's?

The Nakamichi CD45Z will play CD-Rs but will not play MP3 files. Nakamichi Head Units have very good sound quality and look nice in a Mercedes but they have a reputation of being very unreliable. I was going to buy this HU until I read the negative postings on the newsgroup rec.audio.car.

And what was your choice after having read the negative opinions about Nakamichi?? I'm looking for good sound as well as a "Mercedes look" - the less colors on the display the better...

I ended up with an Alpine 7892. It has all the features plus the sound quality that I was looking for.

Hey Tiger,

I have a Nakamichi 45z in my car. I love the simple yet functional style of the deck and the sound quality is awesome. However about a month or so ago, it just tweaked out and started jumping through all the features and could not be stopped, so I had to turn off the radio. The next day I turned it on and it was fine. I don't know if it has something to do with the deck or the wiring, but that was pretty odd. btw, I've had it for almost 2 years now.

Later,
Giancarlo

Giancarlo, how do you like your MB Quarts? Which ones do you have? I have heard that their tweets are really bright, is this true? I am trying to decide on some speakers and I have heard good and bad about Quarts...just wanted your opinion.

Hey mbtjc,

I have Mb Quart Referenz Premium, the step below Q series, 5 1/4" coaxials on my rear deck. They sound unbelievable for their size and the fact that I am only running them through the nakamichi deck, no amp. I have a rockford fosgate 4 channel amp with alpine cd deck and boston acoustic pro series 5 1/4" components in my parents 190 2.6 and I think that the MB Quarts are crisper and clearer. As soon as I get some more money for mods I am going to get the 4" component system for my front. I highly recommend MB Quarts, I only have heard the higher end ones though, Im not sure about their cheaper speakers.

Dont know if you still are looking for a stereo but the Blaupunkt Tokyo RDM169 looks very good in the mb dash. The face goes all the way to the edge unlike Pioneers and other brands that use a trim rind to fill out the dash opening. The lighting is amber with one blue light (blaupunkt mean blue light) and a little green but the green matches the colors of the turn signal indicators, the blue the high beam indicator and liek I said earlier, the amber is almost the same color as the MB dash lights. Also has rotary encoder for volume so its really easy to change volume without looking. The face is not detachable but has keycard security. The unit will not operate without the car in place behind the face. Another added bonus of the card is that is stores all of your presets and preferences. This is a plus if there are two users of a car as each user can have their own settings and all they have to do is put their own key card in and everything is the way they like it.
Hope this helps someone out there.

I think I paid 170 or so for mine. They pop up occasionally on eBay but check www.thezeb.com
As of last week they had some in stock. Very high featured unit. The EQ has at least 10 bands plus separate bass and treble controls, 2 preouts, mono non-fade sub out. Plus it fits perfectly in the dash and looks great. I have had it for a little under a year and have not really had any problems with it.
