Activating phone service for Motorola Timeport in 2001 MB

I recently bought a 2001 E55 that has the factory Motorola Timeport phone already installed. The prior owner had this activated on the east coast. I am in the midwest and am getting the run-around. My dealer says that AT&T or Verizon should be able to activate the phone but one of the cellular providers said I need the dealer to activate it. Another provider said I need to find out what company the prior owner used for cell service out east, and I would have to use the same company. I don't think they know what they are talking about since there must be more flexibility in the choice of cell phone service providers. Does any one know what is involved in getting service established? I would like to use AT&T since they have an attractive plan for my needs. I do understand that using Sprint is out with this phone. The manual indicates it is a TDMA digital phone. Any help would be appreciated.

If it is tdma you probably have only one choice and that is at+t. I would contact at+t and have them handle it!

Scott,

The AT&T rep tried to activate the phone but he couldn't get the proper code from their computer system. They were the ones that told me that Mercedes would have to handle it. He then called their tech support and that person was going to try to get an exception so that the local AT&T rep could enter a code to activate the phone. They haven't come back with an answer yet. The phone is a Mercedes Motorola Timeport model # P8097 and I think that should work with the AT&T network. Is there some technical jargon I need to use to explain to them what is needed to activate the phone? I just don't think AT&T knows how to deal with this system because there aren't that many around here.

Thanks,

Bob I.

I don't know why you are having so much trouble with getting your phone programed. I would suggest you go to the dealer and get them to call at+t and find out what they need to get it done!

I have a digital startac from a 2001 SLK. My local cell guy was easily able to activate it using verizon. no dealer required.

Pull the battery and look for things like CDMA etc. if it says cdma on the inside sticker under the battery, you can activate it using verizon or at&T.

I would find a new cellular guy, who can activate it. its just a bunch of codes they type in.
