300E Becker
I recently purchased an 87 300E. When I picked up the front floorboard (for lack of a better word) on the passenger side I noticed a Becker module with two connectors, both unplugged(?)near the front next to the SRS connection. My radio seems to work fine and I do not want to plug in the harness without knowing what the unit is. Can someone tell me the purpose of this module as it does not show up on my wiring diagrams. The unit does say Becker on it. (amplifier?)

The rectangular box you are seeing is the factory security system for the car. it was probobly disabled because the factory radio was replaced with an aftermarket unit and then replaced with stock when it was sold. To test the unit and see if it is working okay, go ahead and plug in the two connectors with the cars positive battery connection disabled. Then, reconnect the cars battery roll down the the drivers side window, lock the car with the key, then reach into the open window and open the car with the door handle on the inside. the alarm should go off and the lights will blink. You can shut it off by using the key in the ignition or in the door.
Good Luck! Adam

Oh, skip the battery disconnect unless you have the code for your radio. It can be a real pain driving without music for a few days!

Disconnecting the battery won't put the radio in code mode on a 1987 unless the alarm is set when one does such. The radios up to 1990 or 91 needed to be reset by a dealer special tool if in code mode and they didn't go into code mode unless their internal battery was dead (when the cars battery was disconnected). This fact is a real bummer for a tech as an experienced one will know that for these cars no precaution is necessary when removing the radio, but this fact is very hard to get across to an owner after the fact.

Thanks to all. I'll plug in tonight but I think I'll skip the batt. disconnect. I'll let you know what happens.
