Has anyone ever wired the W124 style door speakers to work with a small amp?

In lieu of a powered enclosure in the trunk, has anyone ever wired the front door sub-speakers to a small aftermarket amp? It is easy enough to find the wiring from the front door in the kick panels? Thnx!

P.S. the system has been replaced ( hacked up), and the oem amp is not functioning anymore. Alpine head unit.
