Alpine or Becker 1492

Hello folks and sorry for yet another audio issue. I have always struggled with the typical audio knob problem of sporadically being able to control audio output but have learned to live with it. Just recently, I have absolutely nothing coming from my speakers (95 E320 Coupe) despite my usual fiddling with the said knob. The radio boots up fine, the tape drive works as does the interface with the changer. The amps in the trunk were not touched and the fuses for the radio system are all in tact. I have looked into having the deck refurbished but
I am not all together confident that the deck is at fault. I have heard the coupes have some funky system that the sedans/wagons did not. I also saw another folks posting here of the amps in his trunk (94 E320) but mine are configured differently. Any info or comment would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks very much and safe motoring

Benz are you talking about it crackling before it went silent ? As you turn the volume up it crackles .This is a sign it needs a new potentiometer or volume switch .Any radio guy will replace this part for you . Wont cost an arm or a leg..

Thanks very much for the reply. It never really cracks but violently fluctuates level wise when attempting to turn it down (most embarrassing I may ad).
I accidentally figured out the problem today, however. I ran out after posting the thread to do some errands and when I parked, the steering wheel inadvertently went into the locked position. Upon releasing it and turning her over, surprise! I have tunes again. I have heard the ignition switches are common wear items in some of the 124's. I am going to see if these nice folks carry them and have related install info.
Thanks very much again to you and to the great folks at Pelican.
Happy Spring!

These radios use a quadrature volume control not an actual potentiometer.

Quadrature is an A and B channel binary signal where the two channels pulse train is offset by 90*. The processor looks to see that channel is leading and decides what direction you are turning the knob. The more you turn the knob, the more pulses it makes. This system is why the knob can be turned past 360* and has no effect when the radio is off.

The actual volume control is done electronically so a bad control "knob" won't crackle but it will be erratic and jump on it's own.
